Get your tickets!
KWMR is proud to announce the opportunity for you to see this amazing movie in Point Reyes Station! You can get your tickets HERE. Friday, October 17 at 7 pm (doors at 6pm). Particle Fever follows the inside story of six brilliant scientists seeking to unravel the mysteries of the universe, documenting the successes and setbacks in the planet's most significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough.

For the first time, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation.

As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist?

Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Godfather trilogy), Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

Spooktacular Facts about Halloween

submitted by Devon McMorrow

Boo! Halloween has been celebrated for centuries, but the holiday didn't become popular in American culture until the 1940's. The word "Halloween" means "hallowed evening" or holy evening. Halloween is derived from the phrase All Hallows' Eve (which is the eve of All Hallows Day).

"I put a spell on you..."

People have been dressing in costumes in October since the Middle Ages when the poor would go door to door and beg for food on November 1 (Hallowmas) in return for giving prayers to the dead on November 2 (All Souls Day). The Celts would dress up in costumes on All Hallows' Eve to ward off evil spirits.

"I love you, yeah, yeah, yeah!"

Almost everyone loves the Beatles, and dressing as John, Paul, George or Ringo was a very popular choice for Halloween costumes in the sixties. In the late 1970's,
Star Wars costumes ruled the Empire. Jack Nicholson's "Joker" costume had the last laugh of the 80s. They might have killed Kenny, but the "Kenny" costume from South Park killed at 90s Halloween parties everywhere. The marvelous Minions from Despicable Me
showed up at many doors during the past few years. What will 2014 bring? You'll have to wait and see...

"Oh, Sugar, Sugar."

What do trick-or-treaters crave in their pillowcases? Reese's, Snickers, M&Ms and Twix thrill the little sugar fiends these days. However, candy companies did not create special treats for Halloween until the fifties. Throughout the 50s and 60s, people would give a wide variety of goodies -such as homemade cookies, cereal packs, and, of course, candy. However the candy children received would be full-sized portions-the miniatures weren't invented yet. In the 60s, Brach's came out with a 5-cent pouch of 40-50 pieces of candy corn. Each trick-or-treater would receive one of these packs.

"Up jumped the devil..."

It's not just candy that goes into the baskets at Halloween, but money that trick-or-treats its way into the economy. This year, the National Retail Federation predicted that Americans would spend $6.9 billion on Halloween. This number has doubled since 2005 when Americans spent about $3.3 billion. $300 million is estimated to be spent on costumes for pets alone. So instead of saying, "Wooooooooo," maybe we should say, "Woof!"

Happy Halloween from The Retro Radio Show. Please tune in on Monday the 20th at 9 a.m. to celebrate the spooky season.
