Old car found on Ottinger's this week.
photo: stolen from WM Feed FB Page
Since January 1st of 2014, 16 vehicles have been donated to KWMR providing much needed funding. In 2014 alone just over $10,000 has been raised. I have spoken with many of the donors and they report that overall, donating your vehicle (car, boat, truck, camper, motorcycle, etc.) has been a simple process.

In all cases, donating a vehicle that you no longer need or want and that you don't want to take the time to sell, is a great way to support local community radio!

So, why not say "See ya later!" to that old rig. KWMR will make sure that the spirit of great road trips, cruises on the bay and memorable vehicular experiences are translated into really really good radio!

If you rid your life of that beloved rig, why not request a song be played in it's honor!

Oh, the number to call is 888-596-7288. Let your fingers do the walking!

Happy October!

Station Manager/Executive Director
Get your tickets!
KWMR is proud to announce the opportunity for you to see this amazing movie in Point Reyes Station! You can get your tickets HERE. Friday, October 17 at 7 pm (doors at 6pm). Walter Murch will be at the Dance Palace to talk about his work on the film

Particle Fever follows the inside story of six brilliant scientists seeking to unravel the mysteries of the universe, documenting the successes and setbacks in the planet's most significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough.

For the first time, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation.

As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist?

Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Godfather trilogy), Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

Youth DJ Feature

By Devon McMorrow

"Virtually every artist defines (themselves) as much by the way they look as by the music they play."- Jim Henke, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame chief curator

Which came first? Forget the chicken and the egg. Was it the rock star or the fashion?

Modern music has always been linked to fashion. Rock stars make their own uniforms. Musicians aren't required to wear business suits (although some, like Robert Palmer, have been known to). Generally, musicians employ fashion to further express themselves creatively-or simply to show off their chests, like Lenny Kravitz, who apparently doesn't wear shirts.

People want to dress like their idols. Often, when you see kids, you can tell what type of music they listen to - there is a style for pop, for rock, for the Cure. Even if you aren't going to dye your hair blue, or put a safety pin through your nose, you can still wear a T-shirt that broadcasts who you're listening to.

Punk Rock

Fashion icon Vivienne Westwood designed the outfits for the Sex Pistols. At the time, she was dating Pistols' manager, Malcolm McLaren. Punk pushed back against authority. Vivienne succeeded in making punk mainstream.

Grunge

Bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam inspired grunge "fashion." The look mainly included flannel shirts and outdoor clothing combined with an unkempt appearance. Music journalist Charles Cross said, "Kurt Cobain was just too lazy to shampoo." The idea was to be comfortable - not to start a fashion trend. But music has power, and the kids followed.

Disco

70s fashion emerged from what people would wear to discotheques. Women often chose outfits made from shiny satin adorned with glitter and faux diamonds. Jumpsuits were big. (Thank you, Cher.) Men would wear leisure suits - a polyester shirt open at the front with a polyester jacket and matching trousers. Flashy was in; subdued was out. Some men insisted on wearing large medallions nestled in their chest hair.  (Will someone please explain why?)

Sometimes fashion designers and musicians work together. Gaultier created Madonna's look for her Blonde Ambition tour. (Shoe designer Kobi Levi later created a line of shoes titled Blonde Ambition inspired by the same tour.)

Other times, famous designers give credit to rock stars for their inspirations:

Designer Zang Toi drew inspiration from Prince's Purple Rain for his 2010 fall collection.

Roger Vivier described his Fall 2011 accessories line as: "Think Keith Richards, with an intellectual twist and a thirties feel."

David Bowie inspired Frida Giannini's 2006 fall collection for Gucci. Giannini said, "I was thinking of David Bowie and the way people played with their image to be something different every time they went out in the seventies."

And sometimes, rock stars become designers. Gwen Stefani created a clothing line called L.A.M.B. Jennifer Lopez started J. Lo in 2001. Pharrel Williams recently designed a perfume entitled GIRL.

Some rockers always have the same style - Patti Smith has looked the same for years. However, other musicians are always changing their look -Madonna is constantly evolving.

So which came first, the music or the fashion? It's up to you to decide. But remember, whichever way you go, you can leave your hat on.
