Get your tickets!
KWMR is proud to announce the opportunity for you to see this amazing movie in Point Reyes Station! You can get your tickets HERE. Friday, October 17 at 7 pm. Walter Murch will be at the Dance Palace to talk about his work on the film

Particle Fever follows the inside story of six brilliant scientists seeking to unravel the mysteries of the universe, documenting the successes and setbacks in the planet's most significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough.

For the first time, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation.

As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist?

Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Godfather trilogy), Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

1-2 pm "Climate One." Going to Paris: Ambassador Todd Stern (repeat).Ambassador Todd Stern is United States Special Envoy for Climate Change. UN climate talks in Poland last year achieved modest progress toward an international agreement on reducing carbon pollution. The aspiration is for heads of state to seal a deal in Paris next year that would take effect in 2020. But rich and developing countries are still far apart on who should bear responsibility for increasing human impacts of severe weather. Even some of the most vigorous proponents of moving away from fossil fuels doubt the UN process will ever produce a treaty with teeth. Is the U.S. showing leadership at the climate talks or just playing along? Can 190 nations really agree on any meaningful collective action? Could Beijing and Washington cut a bilateral deal that would go a long way toward protecting the climate that supports our economy? America's top climate negotiator will share his insights with a public audience for the first time since the Warsaw climate negotiations.

5-5:30 pm "Epicenter." Also coming to Mesa Writers Refuge, Tom David has worked for the past 26 years as staff and consultant to a number of private foundations. One of the most widespread critiques of organized philanthropy is its lack of agility and unwillingness to take appropriate risks. He believes that the organizational culture of foundations is at the root of this problem. At Mesa Refuge, he plans to write about the challenges of culture change in philanthropic foundations to support social change.

Center for Car Donations Interview

A chat with Jacquie Elliot, President of Center for Car Donations (...and, it turns out, radio personality!)

By Mia Johnson, Underwriting Coordinator

There aren't that many truly win-win situations in life. Donating a vehicle to KWMR through Center for Car Donations seems to be one of them.

Tax deductible...doesn't cost you a cent....and your car will be picked up, whether it's running or not. Clear up space in your driveway, and feel fantastic knowing the proceeds go to a worthy cause - KWMR! It's a pretty sweet deal for everyone involved.

We've really enjoyed partnering with Center for Car Donations for the past six years. They're ethical, efficient, and even though they're up the road in Bend, Oregon, they're so responsive that it feels like they're right next door!

Much of the positive energy at Center for Car Donations comes from Founder and President Jacquie Elliott. She's been in the car-donation field for over 20 years, and she definitely knows what she's doing. And she enjoys it!

Mia caught up with Jacquie recently....

What inspired Jacquie to get involved with non-profit car-donations?

After building up a successful car-donation program during her time as a development director at a non-profit, she founded Center for Car Donations in 2005.

What does she like most about working at CFCD?

Jacquie said, "It's such a wonderful job. I get to work with people every day who are excited to be donating to their favorite cause. And at the end of each week I get to write a big check to charities! Writing the checks is my favorite part."

How many cars does CFCD process each year?

Center for Car Donations processes around 3,000 cars and other vehicles annually.  Since they began, CFCD has raised nearly 8 million dollars for over 200 non-profits and charities!

What's the weirdest vehicle anyone's ever donated?

Jacquie said they've received all sorts of two-wheeled, four-wheeled, and even non-wheeled donations. From a Rolls Royce to a rusty old food truck... from "Scooby Doo Vans" to giants like airplanes, boats, and semi-trucks...to golf carts and even the occasional lawn mower.

What's the partnership history between Center for Car Donations and KWMR?

KWMR received its first car donation back in August of 2008. Since then, KWMR has received 93 vehicles and is almost at the $30,000-raised mark. Let's keep that trend going!

Does Jacquie listen to public radio?

She definitely does! And she knows it first-hand....as the Wednesday-morning host of "The Point" on Bend Oregon's KPOV, High Desert Community Radio (www.kpov.org) Check out the archive of her community affairs show here: kpov.org/kpov_show/the-point/?submit=view

What's her dream car?

She's always wanted to be the girl from the Beach Boys' song "Fun Fun Fun," so it's an old Ford T-Bird convertible. She says "I do love cars but I love to ride my electric bike around town even more."

I asked her, if we ever make it up to Bend, what's the best place to eat?

Jacquie recommends "Barrio," a tapas place. www.barriobend.com.   It started as a food cart, was a hit, and grew into a full-blown restaurant. (Now I'm wondering....did the owner donate the food cart after he was done with it??? Maybe I'll call him and see if he still has it...)

Thanks for taking the time to chat, Jacquie!

Six reasons to donate your vehicle to KWMR (some from CFCD's website):

1. You don't want to worry about selling it.
2. It is too expensive to repair it.
3. It won't pass the smog test.
4. You don't trust it to be safe on the road.
5. You need a tax write-off.

....or obviously...

6. Your burning, unrelenting, unquenchable love for KWMR!

Convinced? Give a call to 1 (800) KWMR-AUTO, and Center for Car Donations will literally "take it from there."
