West Marin and much of the SF Bay Area received a wake-up call on Sunday morning around 3:20 am. Most of us felt it, some slept through it. The Napa earthquake registered at 6.1 strength got us all thinking about our half-finished earthquake kits, our flashlights with dead batteries and wondering where exactly did I put that "hand-crank" radio?
KWMR is very proud that within ten minutes of the earthquake being felt the station was on the air. Richard Dillman, KWMR Transmitter Wrangler extraordinaire had his Inverness Ridge base up and running in record time (especially since it was the first time). He had been anticipating that he would use it in just this type of scenario.
Many tuned in and got reassurance about what was happening close to home. Others found KWMR, the beacon of a live person on the airwaves as they rolled through both the AM and FM frequencies looking for information.
First responders weighed in from Inverness and Bolinas and Richard reported out data from both the NOAA web site as well as USGS to listeners far and wide. Local calls came in from Point Reyes Station, Inverness Park and Stinson Beach. But what was so amazing was the other calls that came in: Sebastopol, St. Helena, Napa, Vallejo, the Berkeley Hills, San Francisco and Petaluma. These folks were tuning and and reporting out about the level of shaking, what they felt, what they heard and whether or not they had power. Richard Dillman reassuring each listener and asking them questions and then listening to what they had to say.
When this station was founded, soon after the memory of the Inverness Ridge Fire, the promise was made to be a resource for the listeners in times of emergency.
We are proud to say that we have kept our promise.
Richard asks himself frequently, "What would I do if it happened right now." This is a great way to think about how prepared you are for an earthquake or other disaster.
There is also a LOT of great information on the readymarin.org web site. Find out who in your neighborhood is in charge of disaster preparedness. If you are not sure, ask your local fire department. Get involved so that you know who is trained, or get trained yourself and meet your neighbors at a CERT (Community Emergency Response Training).
We are all in this together!
