A funny thing happened on the way to the prom....
It has been a whirlwind of activity this spring surrounding KWMR's 15th year as an FM radio station. Any anniversary is a good time for some reflection.
| KWMR Prom 2014 |
KWMR is one of "65 non-profit" organizations in West Marin. The station has the of day-to-day administration that must take place - bookkeeping, filing, database management, and complying with Federal Communications Commission and Corporation for Public Broadcasting regulations. There are things like budgets, payroll and taxes, etc. etc. We are constantly working to raise the funds to keep the station on the air.
What we really do, the essence of our mission, our reason for existing at all - is to broadcast relevant content on an FM frequency to the communities in West Marin. We are the only ones doing this. Sure you can get other radio stations, but they aren't "local."
The balance that we are constantly striving to strike is to remain flexible and creative in the face of the day-to-day. This requires constantly recalibration. As a team we must always be zooming in on the details and soaring high above what we do. Attention to detail ,while not losing the "big picture perspective" is key.
KWMR strives to stay authentic to our "radio with bite" roots. On our 15th anniversary, it's more than having a party. It is about recalling what it took to get the station on the air, the dedication and hard work by the founders and the countless hours by programmers to create the content.
Quality is also very important. This means that the authentic sounds that you hear on 90.5 or 89.9 FM should be made in a way that doesn't want to make you turn it off. That requires attention by the programmers as well as dedication by the technical staff at KWMR.
Fun is also imperative. Seriously folks, sometimes you just have to laugh, get silly and enjoy the irony, beauty and even the tragedy of life.
"On the way to the prom" this spring the staff of KWMR outdid themselves. We experimented (somewhat successfully*) with a 5 1/2 day Pledge Drive, we collaborated on a meaningful and interesting Art Event at Toby's and we hosted back-to-back events (Eat My Heart Out Supper Club and the KWMR Prom). Whew.
Few programming updates: Rick Clark is on vacation and his subs are doing a fine job! Thank you Loretta and Dr. Joe and Jeff Wilkinson. Chris Breyer is also out caring for a loved one, but will be back in the saddle soon. Jaime Crespo will be taking a sabbatical and there are some fun folks "in the house" to fill the Tuesday night spot in his absence (stay tuned), tonight you can catch his final program before his break. Katie Eberle will be occupying the Friday morning spot from 8-10 am, bringing some news back to the KWMR airwaves. Youth interns will be on board over the summer. Let's hear it for Youth DJ Project!
We are looking forward to the 4th Annual KWMR Golf tournament on Friday, June 20 (more info on sidebar)!
Enjoy these dog-days of summer (heat wave and all), watch out for sneaker waves, clear the defensible space around your home and keep listening to KWMR!
*KWMR has raised very close to $40K from the on-air drive and mailing. We re-calibrated from our $50K goal.

Kevin "Blackie" Farrell on KWMR
|
What a treat it was to get a chance to chat with Blackie Farrell on "Release Me" last night and a big thank you to Tess Koleczek for helping to set it up. Blackie Farrell is an amazing songwriter who has written tunes for and with Bill Kirchen and Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Robert Earl Keen, Leo Kotke and Tom Russell (many of whom write their own songs pretty darn well).

I have had the pleasure of seeing him on tour with Bill Kirchen where he appears on stage to sing Mama Hated Diesels and Rockabilly Funeral. Blackie wrote Sonora's Death Rowe which has been recorded at least 18 times.
He is now working on his own album. He wanted to wait until he didn't have to worry about making a comeback (his own words).
You can catch Blackie the last thirty or so minutes of Release Me and then he plays several songs and tells some great stories during Silver Dollar Jukebox with Peter, Anthony and Tess.
Tess got this sweet message from Blackie.
"I want to thank you, Amanda, Peter, and Anthony, for your warm hospitality, and putting up with my funky old self. I had a great time!
Next time I visit you guys I promise I'll bring some tasty vinyl for you to enjoy. I think what you all are doing there at KWMR is very cool. Keeping the good stuff alive. Again, thanks so much for everything. -Blackie"
