KWMR Round-Up Weekly Newsletter
Program Highlights (and changes)

A note from Program Director Lyons Filmer:

Happy New Year! KWMR has just passed the two-year mark of carrying the weekday news program, "As It Happens" and the weekly wrap-up, "Day 6," produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) at 6 pm Eastern. We had long wanted to offer these news shows, but it wasn't until technology made them available by internet file transfer that KWMR was able to acquire them.

"Day 6" and "As It Happens" currently broadcast on KWMR at 7 am Monday-Friday and 6 am Saturday, providing the previous day's news. We know that some folks like to hear news in the morning and some in the evening. Two years ago, the KWMR schedule couldn't accommodate a same-day-i.e., evening-broadcast. Now we can.

Beginning Monday, January 13,  "As It Happens" will air Monday-Thursday, 5:30-6:30 pm. ("Happy Hour" on Fridays remains intact!) "Day 6" begins Saturdays, 10-11 am, on January 11. We will continue to air these fine news programs in the early morning times to reach all news listeners.

Stay tuned for updates to the schedule and program guide! As always we anticipate feedback and welcome it. Please email [email protected] and [email protected]

RD Award
Richard Dillman with award.
West Marin Emergency Services Volunteer Honored
Supervisors take note of Richard Dillman's longtime commitment

San Rafael, CA - Richard Dillman, who developed and maintains the West Marin Disaster Council (WMDC) Emergency Radio System, was bestowed with the 2013 Lifeboat Award from the Marin County Office of Emergency Services (OES), a unit of the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

Dillman, of Inverness Park, was given the award during the Dec. 17 meeting of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, which approved a resolution in his honor on behalf of all county residents. The Lifeboat Award recipient's most simple qualification: If you had to be stuck on a lifeboat, who would you want to be on it with you? The award is annual recognition to an individual's commitment, dedication and passion for exemplary service and training that directly increases emergency readiness and response capabilities.

Dilliman has logged more than 20 years of working with public safety officials and radio station staffers to convey vital information about emergency preparedness. Like first responders, Dillman and other WMDC operators are trained and ready to take action when an emergency occurs without waiting for a specially licensed radio operator. WMDC radios are found in official Marin County Fire Department vehicles and two County public safety buildings.

The West Marin Emergency Radio System (WMERS) covers the communities of Point Reyes Station, Inverness Park, Inverness, Marshall, Nicasio, Olema, Bolinas, Stinson Beach and Muir Beach. Radio station KWMR, the only broadcast outlet in West Marin, is a critical component of the system as a source of emergency information. Dillman authored an emergency manual for KWMR as well as one for the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. He was the federation's Volunteer of the Year in 2006.

Bolinas Fire Protection District Chief Anita Tyrrell-Brown, on behalf of her fellow West Marin Fire Chiefs, nominated Dillman for the award. "The communities Richard so diligently serves are unique in that during a disaster we can very easily become cut off from outside sources," she wrote in her nomination. "... We are deeply grateful for his vast knowledge and his consistent efforts on our behalf."

We are certainly glad at KWMR that Richard Dillman hangs out in our lifeboat!
Pete Pete the Radio Dog
Pete was a rescue Border Terrier. It took a veterinary assistant pulling him from a short-term shelter, followed by at least four hand-offs, including sitting up front in the cab seat of a semi tractor trailer, to get him safely to West Marin from 'some place' in Oregon. Though cleaned up by the time he got here he was still a bit of a mess, missing a few teeth and scratching. His heart however was raw courage and determination. Having, we suspected, been a lone soldier with no one really looking after him he immediately knew his job. To be present with Kay wherever she went. He did this until December 28 2013.
R.I.P. Pete. You and your spirit will be missed.
