It's a Party Tonight 6pm-9pm

Party in the parking lot at Access Tucson Community Media! Come and enjoy live local music, make a live TV appearance and eat a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich while you pick out your terrazzo tile--a piece of Tucson history. The terrazzo tiles laid down in 1947 for the old downtown VFW building were headed for the dump, but we saved them and now they are available for donation.
Terrazzo Palooza starts at 6pm with the music of Gabriel Ayala, followed by Dan Connolly at 8pm and Speedy Dan at 9pm.

We go live for 10 minute segments at 6:50pm, 7:50pm and 8:50pm on channel 20 (Cox) / 74 (Comcast). Sean Scott is parking his Cheesy Rider Food Truck in front of the building for the night.

Michael Keith, CEO of Downtown Tucson Partnership hosts the live segments with Access Tucson's very own Vicki Evans. They'll be interviewing the musicians, terrazzo tile buyers and covering highlights of all the 2nd Saturday action happening downtown.

Climate Change Conference

Climate Smart Southwest:  Ready or Hot?

Have you ever wondered how climate change will affect us here in the Southwest or if climate change will affect you and members of your family personally?

Here's an opportunity to find out. You can attend this conference focused on public health and climate adaptation coming up Friday and Saturday September 20th and 21st, sponsored by the AZ Physicians for Social Responsibility and 38 other local and national co-sponsors.

Friday, September 20:

There will be a free public talk by Eric Klinenberg, Professor of Sociology at New York University and the author of the best-selling book Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, about the 1995 week long heat wave that took over 700 lives.

His talk is from 7pm to 8pm at the TEP Unisource Building Conference Room, 88 E. Broadway in Tucson. Please RSVP, as space is limited, at the conference website www.psr.org/azclimate.

Saturday, September 21:

The conference is from 7:30am to 5:30pm at the Tucson Convention Center. The cost is $35 ($15 for students) which includes a buffet lunch and parking at the TCC.

In the morning nationally and internationally known speakers will address predicted public health risks and climate change in the Southwest, climate adaptation strategies, and cross border issues related to changing climates.

In the afternoon attendees will participate in workshops on health systems preparedness, food security, mental and spiritual health, educating our children, building neighborhood resilience, and addressing cross border and cultural issues as we adapt to climate change.

To register for Saturday's events and for more information about these events, go to www.psr.org/azclimate.

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is a Nobel prize winning national organization that addresses the health impacts of those events that pose the greatest threats to health and survival of people on our planet. The PSR Arizona chapter, active since 1985, focuses on education and action around potential health impacts of climate change as well as nuclear technologies and other environmental threats.

Physicians for Social Responsibility was recently featured on Local Matters. Dr. Gregg Garfin, Assistant Professor and Assistant Specialist in Climate, Natural Resources and Policy, at the University of Arizona's School of Natural Resources and the Environment and Dr. Ivy Schwartz, an advocate for conservation and healthy communities for underserved populations discussed the conference and the expectations for our changing climate in the Southwest.

Kids Take Over Building

Over the summer, Access Tucson Community Media conducted several youth media classes. Media is so pervasive in our culture today. Kids are bombarded by media messages, hundreds every day. It's important to realize how media (TV, film, web) is constructed so we can recognize bias, differing ideologies and the effect of media ownership and consolidation.

Access Tucson Community Media partnered with CreateIT of the Pima County Public Library to offer a Studio Production class to kids participating in the CreateIT program.

We also worked with Ha:san Preparatory & Leadership School and the University of Arizona Hanson Film Institute to provide a Digital Field Production class for Native youth. Paloma Jacqueline, alumna of both Access Tucson and UA School of Film and Television led the instruction for the Ha:san kids to produce two short films.

In addition to these two partnerships, Access Tucson Community Media held our own youth classes in Animation, Studio Production and Digital Field Production for the public.

See the discovery, creativity, critical thinking and real-world learning these kids used to make their own media--animated shorts, funny newscasts, parodies of K-mart and Chanel No. 5 commercials, horror films, short narratives, a documentary about local ghost stories and of course, a blooper reel.
