Access Your Neighborhood

Access Tucson Community Media works with many non-profit groups and organizations every day to extend the reach of an organization's message. We help you show the community what you do, who you are, and why you are important.

Earlier this year, The Friends of Jefferson Park Neighborhood received a grant from Pro Neighborhoods to team up with other neighborhoods to hold an Urban Neighborhood Symposium. The symposium brought together neighborhood groups with representatives of government departments to create a system of communication that would encourage new leadership with a strong commitment to building equitable relationships and sustainable resources.

Over 85 individuals representing over 40 neighborhoods and/or coalitions participated, resulting in enlightenment, networking, increased neighborhood activism, as well as strengthening and expanding the Neighborhood Support Network.

Representatives of the Urban Neighborhood Symposium were guests on Access Tucson's own community service program, Local Matters.  In addition, four of the Symposium's sessions, "Neighborhood Support Network," "Navigating the City Website," "Community Advocacy 101" and the "Ward III Neighbors Alliance" were videotaped by Access Tucson volunteers, using Access Tucson's equipment, and are currently scheduled to cablecast on Access Tucson channel 20 Cox / 74 Comcast -- just another example of Access Tucson Community Media facilitating local, relevant programming!

PPEP, Inc. Interns Energize
Access Tucson Community Media

Every summer Access Tucson Community Media participates in a PPEP, Inc. (Portable, Practical Educational Preparation) program granting summer internships for youth.

PPEP, Inc. is a non-profit organization providing education, training and practical life skills to empower people, so that they can take the knowledge and skills acquired with them, wherever they go, and deal with every-day problems and challenges, as they occur. The interns receive a small stipend from PPEP while working at local non-profits and small businesses. These youth gain valuable workplace skills and hands-on experience to prepare them for their future careers.

This summer PPEP interns Ashli Owens and Nick Davis spent five weeks working at Access Tucson Community Media. After studio and digital field production training, Ashli and Nick jumped in to assist producers in the studios and media lab. They also worked with staff to shoot and edit behind-the-scenes video of the summer kids' classes as well as much needed promos for the channel. They even did filing with a smile, pitched in with a mop when the women's restroom flooded and kept Betty, the mannequin properly clothed during all the kid summer classes.

Outgoing and dependable, Ashli Owens is currently a senior at Rincon High School where she is the student body president. After graduating, she plans on majoring in journalism at ASU. She describes her experience at Access Tucson Community Media to be very fulfilling.  She believes the staff maintains a very positive attitude and environment; not only for the surrounding staff but for every person that walks through the door. "Every day was a new experience that left you anticipating what is to come next," says Ashli.

Native Tucsonan, Nick Davis attends Cholla High School. An exuberant young man, Nick aspires to be a lawyer, fighting unjust acts day by day, hoping to better the community. Regarding his internship at Access Tucson Community Media, Nick says, " It was very eye opening to see the work that happens behind the camera." Nick appreciates the time and effort the staff has put into this facility; allowing people to freely express their opinions and share the untold stories of Tucson with the community, creating a great environment for the people of Tucson. Nick lives by the motto of "Do the best, be the best", everyday working to his full potential.

Internship opportunities are always available at Access Tucson Community Media. For more information, please contact Lisa Horner at [email protected] or
