FALL 2013

It's almost Thanksgiving and we at QUALITYstarsNY want to express
our gratitude and thanks to our incredible partners and participating sites across the state. Your effort and dedication towards improving the quality of early care and education inspires us to do our best work.

On behalf of the children and families that we serve, THANK YOU for your support. We look forward to continued success in our work together and fruitful collaborations in the New Year.

Implementation Update

QUALITYstarsNY continues to work with over 300 early childhood centers, schools, and family providers statewide on improving the quality of their programs. All sites have received Provisional Ratings and are in the process of receiving scores from their Environment Rating Scale (ERS) assessments. In the coming weeks, QUALITYstarsNY will issue Active Ratings to sites, which take into account both Provisional Rating and ERS assessment scores.

Our team of Quality Improvement Specialists continues to work with each participating program to create individualized Quality Improvement Plans (QIPs). Based on needs identified in the QIPs, sites are able to access a range of available supports and resources, from grants for material purchases for the home or classroom to trainings and credit-bearing coursework.
Race to to the Top - Early Learning Challenge Grant

The NYS Office of Children and Family Services and NY State Education Department recently applied for the federal Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant. New York State is eligible to receive $75 million towards creating an early learning and development system in New York. A significant portion of these funds would go towards expanding QUALITYstarsNY. Grant decisions will be announced in December.

A Look Ahead: Winter/Spring 2014

Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) training will become available to center/school-based participants in preparation for 2014 CLASS observations.

QUALITYstarsNY will disseminate a new brochure for families and launch an online portal to help families identify quality early learning programs and providers and promote quality at home and in the classroom.

Existing participants will utilize ongoing financial and coaching supports aligned with their QIPs.

Additional ERS assessments and re-ratings will be conducted in 2014 to gauge participant improvement.
