SUNDAY AT RESURRECTION
September 14 is Holy Cross Day...and today's message is being given by one of our own, Pastor Lyla Harold. If you haven't met Pastor Lyla (yet)...please take this opportunity to introduce yourself to her (and her husband, Norbert).
Here's a bit of RLC trivia: did you know...that we are blessed to have not one...not two...but four retired ELCA clergy in our congregation? They are: Pastor Tom Bailey, Pastor Lyla Harold, Pastor Ken Martin, and Pastor Wally Rosheim.
In the service itself, we will be installing all of our Christian educators who serve in our congregation and in our Resurrection Lutheran School. These dedicated folks fulfill a number of important roles: Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, Confirmation Faculty, Christian Formation Team, Resurrection Lutheran School Board, Bible Study Group Leaders, Children's Church Staff, and Adult Forum presenters...just to name a few!
Beginning today, our children will be invited to experience "something new" during worship called Children's Church / I Love to Tell the Story. For children age 2 through Grade 5, Children's Church is all about "telling the story" in an engaging and interactive way. Today the children will follow Pastor Carol from the Sanctuary to the Fellowship Hall where our Bible Story (Nick at Night) will be brought to life using some truly awesome Muppet-like "puppets". Rest assured, our story telling will be age appropriate, lectionary based, and utilize the delightful SPARK Story Bible from Augsburg Fortress. Then, just before the Offertory, all children will return to the Sanctuary in order to participate in the rest of the service with their family. That in a nutshell is what Children's Church is all about. Worship that is engaging for the entire family. Worship that really is all about Jesus...and His love.
What's NEW in the Narthex?
'Praying Our Kids Through...(from birth to college)'
Have you noticed the small white "tree"...just to the right of one of the credenzas in the foyer? The Prayer Ministry folks are asking that we each consider taking a child or youth's name from the "Prayer Tree" and, in doing so, pledge to pray for that child or youth...by name...for the entire school year. These are our children....our youth....here at Resurrection. And yes...they, too, need our prayers. Won't you stop by this Sunday...and pick a name? God speed.
By Golly! It's Time for a LUTHERAN REVIVAL in Virginia!
Detailed information can be found in your September Newsletter (on page 6)...but the gist of the story is that we "LUTHERANS" are having a REVIVAL on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in nearby Warrenton. Plan to attend interesting workshops for all ages, a fine fellowship meal, and a wonderful unifying worship service. This year our guest preacher is
Pastor Leila Oritz, a doctoral candidate at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. She has a passion for Protestant Latino/a Liberation Theology in the United States and is especially interested in those she calls "Luthercostals"(Pentecostals who find themselves in our Lutheran churches today).
Both Pastor Jim and Pastor Carol will be leading workshops...and our Chancel Choir will be participating in both the pre-service and worship service. Registration opens at 2:00 and workshops begin at 2:30. The meal begins at 4:00 and the pre-service music starts at 4:45. Five ELCA congregations will be participating this year: Christ Lutheran (Fred.), St. Lukes (Culpeper), St. Peter's (Stafford), Our Saviour (Warrenton) and Resurrection. What a FUN way to "bump into our neighbors" in the ELCA! Ya'll come!
What's Happening This Fall
We continue with one service at 10:00 AM for ten more weeks...which will take us right up to the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 23)...also recognized as Christ the King Sunday. Here's a sneak preview of that day's events: we will not only have our Thanksgiving Service at 10:00 AM, but it will be followed by a "Thanks-Be-to-God" Pot Luck Meal with our friends, the Seventh Day Adventist Hispanic Church (that worships on our campus). What a wonderful way to acknowledge how thankful we all are for our partnership in reaching out to our neighbors...both near and far. Place this one on the calendar TODAY!
On the First Sunday of Advent (November 30) we return to two worship venues: the Traditional Service at 8:30 AM and a more Contemporary Service at 11:00 AM. Christian Formation classes will continue between the services with a start time of 9:45 AM.
TWO WEEK PREVIEW
These next two weeks in September are packed with exciting events that you will certainly want to have on your calendars! Here they are...in a nutshell...just so you don't forget:
3rd Annual Fall Bazaar at RLC / Saturday, Sept. 20 / 8am - 2pm
Healing Service on Sunday, September 21 at 10:00am / Laying on of Hands with Oil
25th Anniversary Celebration at RLC / Sunday, September 28 / Worship at 10:00
What more can we say? There is so much GOOD happening these days at Resurrection. Our prayer is that every one of us will take advantage of the grand opportunities for ministry that are in our midst. Invite your family and friends to "come and see" what God is doing at RLC
