These books are great because after you read one, you will want to read them all! These books, which can be found at your local library, are great for a child who is just beginning to read chapter books and likes to solve mysteries!

Exciting Field Trips Coming Up!
We are excited to share more of our upcoming field trips! The November and December field trips will be released for signups on Tuesday, September 27 via Facebook and email.                                                    ...and more!
Learner Spotlight - Kai and Josie Kimbell
Kai (fourth grade) and Josie (first grade) Kimbell participate in art classes that focus on a historical event with Kim Frassett. Last year, they learned about ancient history and enjoyed art lessons that incorporated drawing, painting and pastel techniques. They compiled their art in a beautiful sketchbook that also included maps, timelines and narratives or essays.

This year, they are participating in the Medieval Experience at the Homeschool at Grace campus in Huntington Beach where they will be continuing their art lessons focusing on Medieval history. They will also be learning about science, economics, handicrafts and games from the Medieval era.

Kai loves learning about history and enjoys classes that help him have a deeper understanding of historical events while Josie loves learning new art techniques and has become a budding artist! They both cherish their books that contain all of their work and enjoy sharing them with family and friends!

High School -- Taking the PSAT
Is your learner planning on going directly to a four-year college or university after high school? If so, sophomores (or juniors who have not yet taken the PSAT) will want to register to take the PSAT test at their local high school to prepare for the regular SAT exam that juniors and seniors take in the spring.

To register at your local public high school as a homeschool learner for the PSAT/NMSQT, please contact the counseling office at your local school to learn their dates and how to register. It will cost approximately $15 to take the test. The school testing dates will either be October 15, 19 or November 2, so please contact them right away to register and be included on their testing list.

On the day of the test, there will be a bubble on the scantron specifically for homeschool learners to mark. For more information, please visit the College Board website. Testing results will be accessible through the personal account you need to create here.

Curriculum Corner -- Writing Resources
Exploring Curriculum is a series covering the core academic subjects for grades TK-8. Here are some of the past subjects covered:

This week we are going to be sharing about books!

Teaching the Classics
Grades K-12
Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic

Teaching the Classics is an outstanding resource for families. Adam Andrews presents a seminar on how to teach literary elements (conflict, plot, characters, setting, theme, context, and literary devices) and ask Socratic questions about literature. Mr. Andrews demonstrates how to engage your learner with literature. The Center for Lit has also published Ready Readers which provide information on the literary elements and Socratic questions for specific books. This product will give you a foundation for talking to your learners about any book or movie and provide you with thought-provoking questions to engage your child.

Moving Beyond the Page
Grades K-8
Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic
Moving Beyond the Page offers complete language arts programs for ages 7-14. Moving Beyond the Page products include parent guides, literature, project ideas, and writing activities. Moving Beyond the Page is a research-based program that integrates learning through literature. This is another program that homeschooling parents love!

BookShark
Grades TK-8
Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic
BookShark has complete curriculums for grades TK-8. BookShark uses a variety of educational resources, including literary fiction and nonfiction, biographies, illustrations, and hands-on experiments to deliver an engaging and complete education that extends beyond textbook memorization. This literature-based company, which integrates science and social studies into its programs, also provides recommendations for math. All of the planning and prep work is done for you when you order this curriculum. BookShark is a favorite of many homeschooling families!

Five-in-a-Row and Beyond Five-in-a-Row
Grades TK-6
Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic
Five-in-a-Row is another literature-based program. A parent guide is provided to teach learners about various language arts concepts using picture books and chapter books. Learners participate in hands-on learning experiences and fall in love with a book when it is used all week as the base for learning. (Please be aware that Five-in-a-Row Volume 4, Below Five-in-a-Row, Christian Character, and the Bible Supplement may not be purchased with funds.)

Books, Books and More Books
Grades TK-12
Learning Styles: Various
For families who love to read and are looking for books on all topics and subjects, Horrible Books is a fun resource. The suggested books cover math, science, and social studies topics. If you have a learner who loves to read fun books to learn concepts, then Horrible Books is the place for you!

Great Schools provides book lists by grade level that include a short synopsis of each book.

Reading to Kids includes a list of books by grade level to choose books for your learner.

For learners just beginning to read chapter books, Good Reads has a list of beginning chapter books. Many of these are series books that your learner could get excited about reading!

Please keep in mind that while links are included to the publisher's website, many of the resources are available at Rainbow Resource and some of the curriculum may be cheaper there. As you begin to place orders, it is usually more economical to place one big order versus paying the shipping costs on several smaller orders.
PIzza Hut BOOK IT!
Pizza Hut BOOK IT is a year-long program that rewards learners for sustained reading. It allows learners to set a goal and obtain rewards by accomplishing the goals. To enroll, visit their website here.
