OPEN STUDIO NIGHT
All iLEAD NoHo Parents/Guardians are Invited to Open Studio Night - Wednesday, September 21!

Now that the fall semester is under way at NoHo, it's time for parents / guardians, staff, and facilitators to meet and greet at Open Studio Night!  Assistant Director Michael Horne will headline the evening, as NoHo's Director Anne Cochran will be in Columbus, Ohio attending the NACAC conference.

Parents, starting at 6:30 p.m. sharp, please come follow your NoHo'er's daily course schedule, experience our classrooms, meet our facilitators and hear their brief presentations, check out our academics, see how your kids are spending their days with us.

Note that in order to cover all eight periods, each session is quite short. Accordingly, please realize and respect the fact that each session is not a Q&A or time for a parent-teacher conference. It's just a designated time for you to get to know us a little better!

Furthermore, time for in-depth discussions regarding your child's performance and goals for the year will occur at ILP meetings on October 6 and 7.

Most importantly, don't forget that finding parking for this event will most likely be challenging, so please allow extra time and arrive early, preferably by 6:15. Once the front and rear lots are filled, street parking is our only remaining option.

6:30 - 6:45 - Directors' Welcome
6:45 - 6:52 - Attend your child's Period 1A course
6:55 - 7:02 - Attend your child's Period 2A course
7:05 - 7:12 - Attend your child's Period 3A course
7:15 - 7:22 - Attend your child's Period 4A course
7:25 - 7:32 - Attend your child's Period 1B course
7:35 - 7:42 - Attend your child's Period 2B course (HQ Advisory)
7:45 - 7:52 - Attend your child's Period 3B course
7:55 - 8:02 - Attend your child's Period 4B course
8:05 - Thank you and goodbye!
(iLEAD North Hollywood closes for the evening)

Hope to see all of you there!

MAP TESTING IS HERE
Over the next two weeks, all learners in grades 9-11 will be participating in MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) tests in their ELA and math classes. Measures of Academic Progress creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student's learning level. As learners answer questions, the system adapts to their ability level and asks either harder or easier questions. When the MAP test is complete, facilitators will have assessment data -- and essential information about what each student knows and is ready to learn -- within 24 hours.

These tests do not affect a learner's grades or graduation. Instead, they will provide valuable information about where learners are at in comparison to grade level standards and helps facilitators provide more tailored and differentiated instruction.

Please speak to your learner about the importance of attending courses during MAP testing, as it is a crucial part of our mission to provide a personalized educational experience. Below is the schedule for MAP testing. Each MAP test takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and the testing schedule has been designed so that the regular course schedule will not be disrupted.

Learners will take their MAP test during whichever facilitator's course they are enrolled in, depending on whether they have them on an A or B Day.

  • September 19 and 20 - Ms. Wilbert's and Ms. Shin's Math Courses
  • September 21 and 22 - Ms. Lazarony's Courses
  • September 23 - Make up testing for Math courses
  • September 26 and 27 - Ms. Salas' and Ms. Haefner-Rubinstein's Courses
  • September 28 and 29 - Mr. Halls' Courses
  • September 30 - Make up testing for Math and English courses
ILPs ARE COMING
As you know, our NoHo learners are engaged in MAP testing in math and English courses in order to give us better information about present levels of performance. A key reason for carrying out this task is not only so facilitators can better serve learners but also to assist in carrying out the ILP process.

Next month, you'll be offered an opportunity (and we highly encourage you to take it!) to schedule a 15-20-minute appointment with your child's HQ facilitator during the afternoon and evening on Thursday, October 6, or during normal daytime operating hours on Friday, October 7.

You'll receive more information about how to schedule this appointment later this month, which will include a form to complete and bring with you.

During this time, your learner will be setting two major academic goals and one social/emotional goal. This 15-20-minute meeting should not be viewed as a parent-teacher conference. Instead, it is a time for learners to take control of their educational processes, be reflective, and learn to set and follow up on goals.

After reports of progress are completed and provided to you in February, you'll have another opportunity in March to sit with your learner's HQ facilitator to review the ILP in light of earned first-semester course grades. These sessions are learner-led conferences, where they will discuss their own progress toward reaching their self-created goals.

SCHEDULE CHANGE REMINDER
An Important Message Regarding Course Schedule Changes:
Please be advised that the hard deadline for submitting fall-semester schedule change requests was Friday, Sept. 9, as repeatedly announced! Please don't ask for any further coursework changes until the beginning of spring semester. Thank you for your cooperation!
VISITS TO NOHO FROM COLLEGE REPS
This schedule will be updated on a weekly basis.

Seniors! You know the ground rules... you are welcome to miss coursework as long as your work in said courses is up to par.  Your facilitators have the right to hold you back. You may not miss a test in order to participate in a college talk. You must RSVP in advance via your Naviance/Family Connection account -- look in the upper-right corner of your main page.

Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen - You are welcome to attend college reps' visits as long as we have room. Stay tuned for more directions coming your way in Tuesday morning's HQ.

This week:
  • Goucher College, Towson (Baltimore), MD - Tuesday, September 20, 12:30 p.m. - Shawn Carr, Assistant Director of Admissions
Goucher is a distinctly superior liberal arts college. If that's what you're searching for, you have every reason to make Goucher a top choice, and here are the top five:
1. Goucher offers superior academics and hands-on teaching - 9-to-1 student-faculty ratio; Average class size of 17; Professors know students by name.
2. One-hundred percent of Goucher's undergraduates study abroad - Lots of options: 60-plus programs in more than 30 countries; Yearlong, semester, and intensive three-week opportunities; ideal preparation for a 21st-century, global economy.
3. Goucher College has an unbeatable East Coast location - 8 miles' north of downtown Baltimore; One hour from Washington, D.C.; 3 hours from New York City; Great for networking and landing jobs and internships.
4. Its graduates have excellent career opportunities - One year out, 92 percent are either employed or pursuing further study; Most go on to graduate school within 5 years of graduating; 78 percent complete internships during their time at Goucher.
5. Goucher is one of Loren Pope's "40 Colleges That Change Lives."
  • Drew University, Madison, NJ - Tuesday, September 20, 1:30 p.m. - Elena Wong, Regional Director of Admission
Drew University, a Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts university, includes the College of Liberal Arts, the Drew Theological School and the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

Drew is located on a beautiful, wooded, 186-acre campus in Madison, New Jersey, a thriving small town close to New York City. It has a total enrollment of more than 2,000 students and has 145 full-time faculty members, 94 percent of whom hold the terminal degree in their field.

The Theological and Caspersen Schools offer MA and PhD degrees and the College confers BA degrees in 30 disciplines. Drew is dedicated to exceptional faculty mentorship, a commitment to connecting the campus with the community and a focus on experiential learning.

Particularly noteworthy opportunities for undergraduates include the the Charles A. Dana Research Institute for Scientists Emeriti (RISE), home of 2015 Nobel Prize Winner for Medicine and Drew Fellow William Campbell, the Drew Summer Science Institute, the Center for Civic Engagement, as well as the Wall Street Semester, Semester at the United Nations, Semester on Contemporary Art and Semester on Communications and Media in New York City and several international semester programs.

Drew also houses the Center on Religion, Culture & Conflict, the Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study and the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, an independent professional theater, as well as the United Methodist Archives and History Center and one of the country's leading concentrations of materials on Willa Cather.

Our very own '16 grad Emily Bogartz-Brown is a freshman at Drew.

  • Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY,  Wednesday, September 21, 10:10 a.m. - Chelsea Sheehan, Admissions Counselor
Still another highly ranked entry on Anne's house of college hits, lovely little Sarah Lawrence College is located in upper-crust Bronxville, NY, which is merely a 15-minute train ride out of NYC's Grand Central Station.

SLC students enjoy the best of two dreamy college experiences...safe, nurturing small liberal arts-oriented study within a prestigious history/setting, and easy access to arguably the world's greatest city without o.d.-ing on it.

Per Edward Fiske, "Sarah Lawrence College attracts creative, highly motivated individuals who are both critical thinkers and devotees of independent learning. They love literature and the fine arts and take pride in their academic prowess. Indeed, freedom and exploration are valued more highly than any tradition here...emphasis on small classes and one-on-one conferences with professors....those looking for a 'standard experience (frats and football)' might want to look elsewhere...all students become intimately acquainted with the written word; writing begins in the first year at SLC, and continues relentlessly 'across the curriculum' for the next three...Study abroad programs are offered in Florence, Paris, Oxford, London, and Havana; 50 percent of students participate."

The strongest academic programs at SLC include Writing, Psychology, History, Literature, Visual and Performing Arts. It tends to share applicants with NYU, Bard College, Hampshire College, Bennington College, Lewis & Clark, Oberlin, Boston U.

After graduating from iLEAD NoHo in June, Ezra Kahn now attends SLC.

  • California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA - Thursday, September 22, 9:30 a.m. - Kress MacLaren, Southwest Director of Recruitment
Founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer, a German cabinetmaker, whose vision was shaped by the Arts and Crafts movement, California College of the Arts (CCA) is noted for the interdisciplinarity and breadth of its programs.

CCA educates students to shape culture and society through the practice and critical study of art, architecture, design, and writing.

Benefitting from its two San Francisco Bay Area location as well as its Oakland campus, the college prepares students for lifelong creative work by cultivating innovation, community engagement, and social and environmental responsibility.

NoHo's Class of '16 grad Maya Djiji currently attends CCA.

How to Reach Us

"Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened. Don't open the door to the study and begin reading. Take down the dulcimer. Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground."
