Message from the Directors

This week we would love all of you to think about greatness. What is greatness? Is greatness something one is born with or is it something that can be learned and strived for? At iLEAD Encino we believe that every child has greatness within them and it is our job to unlock that potential so they can achieve their personal best.

Greatness comes when we seek opportunities and take them when they present themselves! We would love to open up this dialogue at our next parent university.

 Mrs. Kaufman and Mr. Rios
CALL TO PARENTS IN SUPPORT OF ILEAD ENCINO!

Last month talk show host, John Oliver, aired an almost 20 minute segment disparaging charter schools. Indeed, a few bad apples can hurt the lot, but we all know that our school is the wave of the future.

In rebuttal, The Center for Education Reform is tossing out a challenge to all US charter schools, to create a 3 minute video explaining why their school is making a huge difference to children and their families, and why we are on the precipice of shattering the old paradigm and revitalizing our educational system.

We ask for a maximum of 10 minutes of your time on Wednesday at the ILS campus to tell the camera in your own words, how iLead Encino has positively impacted your lives, especially your child's life. We'll be there throughout most of the day, so if you can let us know of a window of time, even better!

The filming will be very organic and fun, and we promise everyone will look and sound great!

And oh...we also have a chance of winning $100,000 for the school, so that's a nice added incentive right there!

Hope we can see you Wednesday morning for a sound bite or two. Thank you!

 Mrs. Kaufman
Curriculum Corner

Several families have asked for more information on PBL. We suggest visiting bie.org. On their site you can learn more about PBL and the Gold Standard PBL that we are striving for here at iLEAD Encino.

Below is also the video shared at Parent University last week. The Parent University was filmed and will be available on the new iLEAD Encino Youtube channel next week.:

Yearbook

Yearbook club is off to a swinging start and the kids are chomping at the bit to get involved in documenting our activities for the year. One thing that we as a team are looking for is a camera to be donated to the club solely for the purpose of the learners to take pictures. It doesn't have to be the most expensive camera around but something that is easily navigated for beginners and shows the learners the difference in picture quality. If you have or know of someone who has a camera they are willing to donate please email corina.powell@ileadencino.org or deliver it to Mrs. Kaufman at the ILS site! Thank you!

Lunch Program

We are thrilled to have Chef Jackie back for another year. This year she has expanded her lunch delivery program to Monday-Thursday and will deliver to both Learning Studios! Please use the following order form for the week of September 26. Completed forms are all due by Friday, September 23, and can be dropped off in the offices at both PLS and ILS.

Community Service

One of the ideas we really want to impress upon our learners is the desire to help our community at large. We support all our learners who work toward bettering society and helping others.

One of our learners, Jaxon Malcolm, works with The Children's Hospital Los Angeles as a Jr. Ambassador.

CHLA is where he had both of his kidney surgeries and he wanted to give to the hospital that saved his life. October 8 is Jr. Ambassador action day and Jaxon is hosting his first fundraiser. It is a family event with a morning movie screening of "Casper" and a costume contest at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.

ASTROCAMP is a unique outdoor science program available to the learners of our school. Specializing in astronomy and the physical sciences, ASTROCAMP meets the increasing demand for up-to-date education on these rapidly advancing fields of science.

Where better to learn about the universe than under a clear night sky in the mountains! Classes include lights and lasers, rocketry, electricity and magnetism, and a sophisticated observational astronomy evening program, among many others. ASTROCAMP also has a large pool for microgravity classes and high ropes course for team building. The entire ASTROCAMP experience is designed to awaken and sharpen student interest in the scientific study of the universe as well as build self-esteem and problem solving skills through safe challenge activities.
