NOHO CLASS OF '16 CHECKS INTO COLLEGE

We LOVE THESE NOHO CLASS OF '16 PHOTOS, AND ARE DYING TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU!
As you know, we're SO proud of our Class of '16 and their college matriculation results! After all, '16 was our first-ever graduating class, and we challenge you to find a new school's very first graduates who landed at as many great colleges throughout the nation as ours did.
Here is a group of photos Anne gleaned from some of our grads as they moved into their new homes away from homes. We are very, very proud of them. If we are able to collect more of them from others, we'll be sure to share in future issues!

PSAT REGISTRATION STARTS TODAY
| |
PSAT REGISTRATION STARTS TODAY! NOHO'S PSAT EXAM DATE - OCTOBER 19! Registration closes at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 16, SO ACT NOW!
Important info -- please read the following info in its entirety:
Registration starts today for Sophomores and Juniors to take the PSAT, and closes 1 p.m. on Friday, September 16. No extensions, no exceptions!
Again, The PSAT is for NoHo's sophomores and juniors only! Too late for seniors, and a bit too early for freshmen. Also... NMSQT stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Only juniors' scores qualify for consideration. Sophomores are enthusiastically encouraged to take it as a practice run!
Future college-going 10th- and 11th-grade learners should indeed take the PSAT. For all such pre-registered learners, the exam will promptly begin at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, and will end just before lunchtime. Late-to-arrive participants will be turned away at the door with NO REFUND (as a test site, we have to pay College Board for each exam we order). We have to order the exams from College Board NOW, so please don't delay.
NoHo sophomores and juniors: We charge $25 for each ordered exam. If you wish to register for our October 19 PSAT administration, please bring $25 cash (or check made to "Parents In Partnership") to Kim Loza at Noho's front desk, today through this coming Friday, September 16 at 1 p.m. If you believe your family qualifies for a PSAT fee waiver, please know that iLEAD NoHo (as is the case at any participating 9th-12th-grade facility) is allowed a very limited number of fee waivers, thus they are disseminated on a first-come/first-served basis. Following are PSAT fee waiver guidelines:
Who's Eligible for PSAT FEE WAIVERS: Eleventh-graders who qualify for or are enrolled in the NSLP are eligible. Students in areas covered by the Community Eligibility Provision must qualify on an individual basis. The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT have the same fee-waiver criteria.
Alternative Eligibility: Eleventh-graders qualify for fee waivers if any of the following statements is true: - Their family's annual income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service. View the USDA's Income Eligibility Guidelines.
- They're enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that aids students from low-income families (e.g., TRIO programs such as Upward Bound). PSAT/NMSQT Coordinators responsible for requesting fee waivers should work with the individuals coordinating these programs to ensure that sufficient quantities of fee waivers are requested by the deadline.
- Their family receives public assistance.
- They're homeless or live in federally subsidized public housing or a foster home.
- They're a ward of the state or an orphan.
What, exactly, IS the PSAT? Here's a succinct description of it, much of it directly lifted from Wikipedia - it's accurate:
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and co-sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the United States. Approximately 3.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT each year. In 2013, 1.59 million high school sophomores and 1.55 million high school juniors took the PSAT. Younger students are also eligible to take the test. The scores from the PSAT/NMSQT are used to determine juniors' eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
It's also traditionally used as an opportunity for sophomores and juniors to practice taking the SAT via a similar exam, with useful diagnostics provided alongside scores.

ALL ABOUT NOHO'S CLASS OF '17
| |
On Wednesday, September 7, a standing-room-only crowd poured into iLEAD NoHo's music studio and participated in "
All About the Class of '17," where NoHo director Anne Cochran delivered college application info and instructions to all 80
NoHo seniors and their parents and guardians. The Class of '17 welcomed 15 new members this year, which brings this year's graduating class to 80 -- that's 16 more grads than last year's inaugural graduating class!

AT THE NOHO SITE -- COMING AND GOING POLICY
| |
Learners arriving late (which means after their first course of the day has begun) must sign in via the binder in the main office and complete the indicated information.
If a learner is being picked up to leave early (missing an academic period), an authorized parent/guardian must walk into NoHo's front office to complete sign-out procedures.
If a learner does not have a 4th-period course, he/she may leave NoHo upon completion of 3rd period without signing out. If same learner chooses to remain on campus, he/she must stay in The Commons (the front patio).

IEP AND 504 ALERT
| |
For Parents/Guardians of Learners with IEPs and 504s
Ms. Cross is in the process of garnering approval to request accommodations for your learner. This will NOT happen automatically. Please email her at [email protected], indicating for which tests your learner needs accommodations, and what dates your learner plans to take the test(s). Accommodations are not automatically provided, and must be approved by the appropriate private organization itself, so please complete this task ASAP. Thank you!

VISITS TO NOHO FROM COLLEGE REPS
| |
This schedule will be updated on a weekly basis.
Seniors! You know the ground rules... you are welcome to miss coursework as long as your work in said courses is up to par. Your facilitators have the right to hold you back. You may not miss a test in order to participate in a college talk. You must RSVP in advance via your Naviance/Family Connection account -- look in the upper-right corner of your main page.
Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen - You are welcome to attend college reps' visits as long as we have room. Stay tuned for more directions coming your way in Tuesday morning's HQ.
This week:
Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Michigan
10 a.m. Thursday, September 15, The Studio - Meet assistant director of admission Rudi Goddard!
|
| | Rudi Goddard |
Kalamazoo (K) College is a very well regarded, small liberal arts school that (per Edward Fiske) opens up the world to its students -- literally. An impressive 80 percent of K kids study abroad, thanks to the ingenious K-Plan, a quarter system that allows students to study abroad one, two and three academic terms. And if you need an extra boost to round out that resume, there is an extensive internship program. Obviously known for its liberal arts majors, K also offers an exciting and effective business major, which is relatively rare to find in high mission/vision-style liberal arts colleges. The city of Kalamazoo is a "fun city with lots going on and many ways to get involved," said one K student. The campus is close to Lake Michigan's beaches, Western Michigan University, and close (enough) to Chicago for weekend commutes.
Coming up next week:
- Goucher College, Baltimore, MD - Tuesday, September 20, 12:30 p.m.
- Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY - Wednesday, September 21, 10:10 a.m.
- California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA - Thursday, September 22, 9:30 a.m.
