Let's Explore Books

Bridge to Terebithia
By Katherine Patterson

Jess Aarons' greatest ambition is to be the fastest runner in his grade. He's been practicing all summer and can't wait to see his classmates' faces when he beats them all.

But on the first day of school, a new girl boldly crosses over to the boys' side and outruns everyone. That's not a very promising beginning for a friendship, but Jess and Leslie Burke become inseparable.

Together they create Terabithia, a magical kingdom in the woods where the two of them reign as king and queen, and their imaginations set the only limits.

Learner Spotlight
Lazarus Shapiro is an amazingly talented young man. This 11-year-old ninth grader is not only academically advanced, but is also an accomplished dancer.

Laz has been dancing since he was 5 years old. He began as a commercial dancer and then began ballet at 9. He currently devotes more than 20 hours per week over the course of six days to developing his craft.

Laz says, "It is hard to describe why I love to dance because it is such an essential part of myself. I can't imagine a life without ballet. It allows me to express my emotions through movement and to share those feelings as art for an audience."

Laz is on track to graduate high school at 15, at which time he would like to pursue dance further. He also plans on attending college to study law, history and political science. Ultimately, he'd like to pursue a career in government service.

Service Project at Park West Care and Rehabilitation Center in Santa Ana

(All Ages)
Date: Wednesday, October 26
Time: 10 a.m.
Cost: Free

Please join us to brighten the day for residents at Park West Care and Rehabilitation Center located in Santa Ana. Have your child/children wear their Halloween costumes (if they have one). We will meet out front of the facility at 10 a.m. and walk in together as a group at 10:05 a.m. The first part of our visit will be in the community room. Those residents who are able will be wheeled in and we will conduct a short activity/performance for them. Learners who would like to play a piece on the piano, recite a poem, sing a song, or anything else are more than welcome.

Please contact [email protected] if you would like to share a talent. The second part of our visit will consist of a parade down the hallways and through the rooms for those residents who are in bed. The residents love seeing the children and their costumes. Please avoid wearing masks, scary costumes, and realistic accessories (fangs, blood, etc.). This will be a special event for the residents and a wonderful way for your children to show love and serve those who may be going through a difficult and lonely time.

Family Fun: Aquarium of the Pacific Homeschool Day
The Aquarium of the Pacific is inviting homeschool networks, learners, parents and teachers to their Homeschool Days, scheduled 9 a.m. to noon September 14 and 15.

While the Aquarium will be open to the general public, no classroom-based school trips will be booked during these days. This will allow their educators to bring you ocean-related activities and biofacts throughout the morning. These engaging learning stations will allow learners of all ages to experiment, investigate, and explore marine habitats and concepts.

Not able to attend Homeschool Days? Consider visiting them on any other day and receive the same group rate. As a homeschool group, all you need is a minimum of 10 people for group admission, or 20 for a classroom or theater program. Advance booking with the Aquarium's Guest Support Center is required.

Online Subscriptions
iLEAD is offering some amazing subscription options at deeply discounted rates for our iLEAD learners. We have contracted with many vendors to create a list of popular, well-received subscriptions to provide greater choices for our families.

There are two ways in which you can save:

1) Order one of the optional subscriptions offered in our Optional Subscription Ordering Form by September 16. The order will be sent directly to your EF for processing. In order to receive the special pricing deals, we are required to submit one bulk order of subscriptions for each vendor which is why there is an ordering deadline. All subscription orders through the form will be processed on September 16. To receive these special deals, we also have to meet a minimum number of subscription purchases. Please note: If we do not meet the minimum number of subscriptions required by the vendor, we will not be able to complete your order, and your funds will not be deducted.

2) You can find additional subscriptions offered for iLEAD learners through iLEAD Homeschool-Buyers Co-op. There is no deadline to order subscriptions through Homeschool Buyers Co-op. Orders through Homeschool-Buyers Co-op are submitted to your EF just like a regular material order using a material order form, or emailing your EF directly.

We encourage you to take the week to check out the websites included in the ordering form as well as your options on Homeschool Buyers Co-op. Please take advantage of free trials and have your child look through the program to see if it might be a good fit before submitting any orders as there will be no refunds given.

Curriculum Corner -- High School Online Courses
This week, we will be sharing some of the online options for our high school learners. Please discuss all options with your EF before enrolling in courses.

iLEAD Online

Did you know that iLEAD offers online classes for high school and middle school learners?

Many iLEAD Online courses are a-g approved and could be taken by learners on the customized or a-g paths. The courses are facilitated by highly qualified teachers. Check out the course catalog] of innovative, project-based online courses.

Global Student Network
Global Student Network (GSN) is a corporation accredited by AdvancED as an online and homeschool curriculum provider.

iLEAD Exploration learners:
  • Must use Accelerate, Odysseyware, Gradpoint, Apex or A+ (Honors).
  • May not use funds to take Plato or Christian courses.
  • Must take a-g courses from Gradpoint, Odysseyware, Accelerate or Apex and the courses must be taken with teacher support.
BYU Independent Study
BYU Independent Study has a variety of course offerings! Our learners may enroll in the Paper, Online or Teacher Led (TL) courses. If a learner is on the a-g path, the learner must enroll in the TL courses.

Blue Tent
Blue Tent offers a variety of honors and AP courses. Most learners that take courses from Blue Tent take the AP test upon course completion. These courses, designed for high achievers, are very rigorous. They are not a-g approved and may only be used with the customized path.

Checking for A-G Approval
Families should always check the University of California A-G Approved Course List to determine if a class is a-g approved. To do so:
  1. Visit the University of California A-G Course List webpage.
  2. Choose the programs/online publisher option and type in the program name.
  3. Use the populated list to review courses that are a-g approved.

Exploring Curriculum is a series covering the core academic subjects for grades TK-8. Here are some of the past subjects covered:

Please keep in mind that while links are included to the publisher's website, many of the resources are available at Rainbow Resource and some of the curriculum may be cheaper there. As you begin to place orders, it is usually more economical to place one big order versus paying the shipping costs on several smaller orders.
" The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character -- that is the goal of true education."
