SCVi Receives Accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

For the past year and a half, SCVi has been conducting a rigorous self-study of its school in preparation for a visit from a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation team this fall. Today, we are pleased to announce that we have received a full 6-year accreditation term from WASC, effective now through June 30, 2020.

WASC is one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. Through its review processes, WASC confirms that an institution has substantially met the Commission's Core Commitments and Standards of Accreditation and associated Criteria for Review and, thus, possesses the resources, policies, and practices to achieve its educational goals and has provided evidence of the quality of its educational programs. Accredited institutions are also subject to the conditions established by the Commission, including its policies.

Institutions, such as SCVi, elect to undergo accreditation review for several reasons besides assurance of quality and adherence to academic standards. Accreditation . . .

  • determines a school's eligibility for participation in federal and state financial aid programs.
  • is important for acceptance into accredited colleges and universities.
  • is periodically reaffirmed, at least once every 10 years.

SCVi's WASC accreditation comes on the heels of another exciting announcement during the 2013-2014 academic year: This fall, SCVi became the first in the city of Santa Clarita to be awarded the world-renowned International BaccalaureateŽ (IB) Diploma Programme certificate of authorization. The IB Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced program of education that prepares students for success in college and life beyond with its emphasis on important 21st-century skills like critical thinking and communication. The program is taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.

"We are incredibly proud of our staff, learners, and families for the hard work and passion that went into making both the WASC accreditation and the IB Diploma Proramme authorization a reality this school year," says Dawn Evenson, Executive Director of Education. "As this is SCVi's first year with a graduating class of seniors, we know these two accomplishments will go a long way toward helping our learners to achieve their college and career dreams."
