Mid-Winter Apple sale  $ .49 per lb

Nice hard apples are starting to come out of CA storage.  Controlled atmosphere storage is when the oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, temperature and humidity are all manipulated in such a way as to put the living and breathing apple "to sleep".   Alas we do not have access to CA storage so our apples are softer at this time of year.  But that also means they have more flavor and higher sugar content.   So now is a great time to to make some apple sauce, pies, crisp, coffee cake and the like.  Warm up that kitchen, push those scents through the house.  Teach your kids so they have a "like mamma used to make" story.

Warm

Speaking of warm, Jo-Anne just got in a new batch of corn bags to warm you up on these cold days.  I'm just a skinny guy and get cold easily just like my Dad.  I can grab a corn bag and stuff it inside a few layers and it warms me right back up.  Use it in the car on the way to work, where ever you are cold.

We also have the usual beef, honey, maple syrup, fudge etc.  So come on out Friday or Saturday and stock up and then go back home and make a memory with your kids.  Speaking of memories...

Traditions

I posted on Facebook Christmas Day about our Reindeer Games  so I'll repeat that for our email only readers and tell you all about our 12th night tradition.

Reindeer Games

Merry Christmas all from Abbott Farms. Our Christmas is starting a little late. One of the reindeer (calf) developed a cough last night and on this 5 below morning it was much worse. So before we have Christmas the farmer needs to take care of his animals. The calf got a shot of OTC and we hope for the best. That reminds me of a tradition we had as a kids that I bet you didn't. We put hay out for the reindeer. We were always waiting Christmas morning for Dad to come in from the barn. No wonder Dad use to tell us not to feed the reindeer too much or they wouldn't be able to fly. Farm life, I love it!

Twelfth night

Besides santa and his reindeer, another tradition we celebrated in our family was the Twelve Days of Christmas.   For us it's the Twelve days after Christmas ending on January 6th.  The idea was the wise men did not get to the manger the night of Jesus's birth.  Some think it was actually three months or more before they got there.  The SUV back then was a donkey or a camel!  We followed the conventional idea that it was 12 days to Epiphany (the coming of the magi)  To celebrate it we picked a family name out of a hat on Christmas day.  Kind of like secret santa, but with a twist.  For the next twelve days we tried to do kind things for that person without giving away who we were.  On  Twelfth Night we would tell about the nice things that happened to us in those 12 days and try and guess who it was doing them.    We would give a gift to the person we had drawn to "unmask" ourselves.

Twelfth Night reminded us of the gift Christ gave us by just by leaving Heaven and even coming to this fallen earth we call home.  It reminded us that Christ did not come to us as a rockstar, for fame or recognition but to serve.  It taught me that true charity is done in secret.  Let not the left hand know what the right hand is doing.   These and other traditions have helped shape who I am today.  I hope you had some good ones in your family this Christmas season as we look forward to Easter and Christ's giving of the ultimate gift, Life.
