Week 13 of Apple Picking

Change in Hours Now: M-Sat 10-6 Closed Sunday

There are apples still to be picked and apple Cider to be tasted!

Share this so charities in need of apples get this. BUT, BUT, BUT,

Please read the whole post.  I had to delete a post off facebook this morning because people were not reading the whole thing, getting the wrong idea and deluging us with calls.  So if you shared that one, please share this one again because the other one is deleted!

Abbott Farms Charity Apple Pick

What the apples just happened?

1.  The frost in April 2012 caused the trees to put on tremendous numbers of fruit buds in the summer of 2012 for the 2013 season.  More than 1000 per tree in most cases.  But we only want 80 to 110 !

2.  We held some old trees in the orchard another year because we had sold out in 2012.  We like happy customers.

3.  2013 was a great apple growing year!

We found ourselves with extra apples at the end of the season.  We are a retail only farm.  If you don't buy them, we don't sell them!  So we ran a half price sale to spread the bounty back to our customers and moved some (its still on!) but not enough.  We wanted to give them to food pantries and such but we had no way of picking them.  This is where you all came in.

On Monday November 4th Mike posted on Facebook calling for charities and volunteers to come and pick them on Wednesday November 6th.

622 people shared that post so 46,288 saw it.  Hundreds came to pick.   Mike did at least 15 media interviews.  We are still counting up what charities took on Wednesday.  We know we had 100 cars in the lot most of the day.  Despite charities hauling away apples all afternoon, we ran out of containers and had to stop early.  We know we have 66 bins representing 840 bushel in our cooler that the FoodBank will pick up later.  They think they can move 30 bins in the next two weeks.   Not bad for 3 days planning!

People have been asking,

Can we still pick for ourselves?  Yes!

We are still open for half price upick.

We still have JonaGold, Crispins and Fuji on the trees.

The weather is actually keeping them "in the fridge" at this point.

I'm going to word the following differently so read it carefully!

Can we still pick for charity?    NO!    Unless:

BYOC (Bring your own charity)

If you have your own charity   to pick for and can be self contained

All THREE of the following are required to charity pick at this point!

1. bring us something that proves your charity

501c3 paperwork or tax exempt paperwork is great

we need to keep the scammers away

2. bring your own container...   You done gone and filled ours up already!

3. bring your own pickers... its been a great year and we are tired!

1+2+3 = then and only then, is charity picking still on !

If you are a charity without pickers or a picker without a charity comment on this post and meet each other!  We just need all 3 of the above when the picker comes to pick.

share this with those that could use them

 APPLE SALE

"Help us clean up the orchard sale" 50% off 2009 prices!

Till they are gone or weather stops us.  Apples at this stage can take several frosts.  The sugar inside acts as antifreeze.   A frost on the ground does not always mean a frost on the apples.  So I am looking forward to another week of good picking yet.

50% off pricing is as follows

Family Bag, can hold up to 10 lbs,  now only  $5.50

Baker Bag, can hold up to 23 lbs,   now only  $9.50

In store bin run apple prices are also half price.
Parking is always Free

Sugar levels are climbing so now is the time for no sugar added applesauce!  Get a group together, share the work and have fun making a memory.  You can assemble and freeze pies, or  whatever it is that you do with apples to make your kitchen like home, now is the time.

Cornbags warm you up!

My manager JoAnne was all over me for using an old corn bag picture.  She is right we have all kinds of neat shapes and sizes.  What a warm gift!

Just microwave for a couple minutes for renewable warmth.

Thanksgiving is coming, order your pies now!
