Apple Notes
Apple season is on time this year. Varieties for upick are usually available only 2 weekends so don't miss your favorite.
Information on some of the Apple Varieties at Abbott's
Apples are more plentiful this year. The heavy fruit set causes size to be down but numbers are way up as the trees try and compensate for last years light crop.
U-pick Apple Varieties available now,
in picking week 5.
20oz Pippen, in the store Saturday, will not be upicked
HoneyCrisp, in the store Saturday, u-pick next week
Mac, this is the best weekend for mac lovers.
Gala, small this yr but perfect lunchbox size for a healthy sweet snack.
Ginger-Gold, will be all done this weekend
20oz Pippin
In the store Saturday (no upick)

We don't know much about it, Its huge, hard, tart, great for pies and baking!
HoneyCrisp in the store Saturday, u-pick next week

Note the apple half on top is very green and not ripe, ignore the red in the bottom half and look at the green, its just starting to turn yellow and is just ripe enough to pick. In the store Saturday, upick latter next week. Most are still too green (less than full flavour) right now.
McIntosh

I am getting this information from a few published sources, including Wikipedia. It is not my original prose. Every McIntosh apple has a direct lineage to a single tree discovered in 1796 by John McIntosh on his farm in Dundela, near Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada. He discovered the tree as one of 20 apple seedlings while clearing the farm, which he had just purchased. He transplanted the seedlings, cultivated them, and only one of them was still alive by 1830. The surviving apple tree lived until 1909. The oldest surviving (graft from the original tree) descendant died on July 25, 2011. The Snow Apple, also known as the Fameuse, is believed to be a parent of the McIntosh. Offspring of the Mac include, among many others, the firmer Macoun (a Jersey Black cross), the Spartan (recorded as a Newtown Pippin cross), the Cortland, the Empire, the Jonamac, the Jersey Mac and possibly the Paula Red. William Tyrrell Macoun of the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa is credited with popularizing this variety of apple in Canada. There are more than 10 types (sports) of McIntosh grown and sold today as Macs, many of them patented. We have 2, Worcester and Linda. Linda matures 4 days latter than Worcester.
Gala
My favorite, it was "born" the same year as I, 1965, but half a world away in New Zealand. The Gala is a cross between Kidd's Orange Red & Golden Delicious. Donald W. McKenzie, an employee of Stark Bros Nursery, obtained a US plant patent for the cultivar on October 15, 1974. Since then more than twenty sports have been patented. Most of the newer selections are for more of a red color. Personally, I say leave it alone, after all it's half a Kids Orange so it should be orange! It tends to be smaller in size and has a sweet, creamy, yellow flesh. It is great eaten fresh and is excellent for many culinary uses. My personal favorite use is in Apple Crisp. Gala does not cook soft like most others. It is still relatively firm after cooking so the Crisp still has some body to it. After all it is a Crisp!
