Apple Notes
Apple season is on time this year. Varieties for upick are usually available only 2 weekends so don't miss your favorite. Apples are more plentiful this year. The heavy fruit set causes size to be down but numbers are way up as the trees try and compensate for last years light crop.

Zestar known in the UK as the Flavar, is perhaps the most flavorful summer apple. It is also known as the Minnewashta Apple. Released in 1998, it is a newer variety from Minnesota which is a cross of a State Fair and MN1691. It's a crisp apple that is best for fresh eating. It has a sweet tangy flesh. This apple is protected under the US Plant Patent #97120.

Paula Red also known as the Arends' Apple, was discovered around 1960 by grower Lewis Arends near a McIntosh block in his orchard in Sparta Township, Michigan. He named the apple after his wife, Pauline. Paula Reds appeared on the market as a distinct cultivar in 1968. The Summer Mac is closely related to this apple. It has a crisp white flesh that is mildly sweet and is excellent for baking, sauces, or cider.
