Jeff Schmalz was diagnosed with AIDS 25 years ago after collapsing at his desk at the New York Times. The disease set him on a new course, one that eventually changed the way "the paper of record", and many others around the country, wrote about AIDS and about the lives of gay men and women. Sam Freedman will be giving the d'var torah Saturday on his project "Dying Words"(an audio documentary and a book) about Jeff Schmalz, his work, and his contributions.

Post-Kiddush Learning:
Dialogue for the Sake of Heaven in Israel and the West Bank
Rabbi Amy Eilberg will share the historical story of the 9th of Adar, when traditional sources tell us that debates in the beit midrash grew destructive, even violent. As an illustration of "debate for the sake of heaven," we will host several of the travelers on Rabbi Eilberg's recent Interreligious Pilgrimage to Israel and the West Bank. The travelers will speak of their experience doing difficult yet respectful dialogue, while listening to many different perspectives on religion and politics in Israel and the West Bank.

5776 is the Year of Torah (YoT) at Beth Jacob, a year-long celebration of Torah and community. There will be many events, the highlight of which will be the restoration of one of our Sifrei Torah. Everyone can participate in this hands-on restoration project, led by Beth Jacob Congregational Educator and Sofer D. Marcos Vital.
 Parasha Connection: February
For February's Year of Torah Parasha Connection, there will be a special edition of 'For the Jew in the Pew' with Rabbi Lynn Liberman featuring special guest Elizabeth "EB" Barnard. From 9:15 - 10 am, they will discuss "Parashat Terumah - Building the Tabernacle from wood: a woodworker's perspective!" Come study the weekly Parasha with an eye toward attempting to discern the craftsmanship and sacred work of Bezalel through the skills of a modern woodworker.
Torah Restoration:
February
For February's Torah Restoration Event D.Marcos will be doing Torah restoration work on Tuesday February 16 from 7-8:30 pm at Beth Jacob; come watch, and maybe even get a chance to help!
