Bat Mitzvah
My name is Bella. I am twelve years old. I go to school at HMJDS and I am in seventh grade. I enjoy playing piano and competing in track and field, but also just running for fun. My family members are my mom Jennifer, my dad Robert and my older sister Naomi.
My Torah portion is Yitro, which means "Jethro." Jethro is Moses's father in-law. In this portion, the Israelites camp at the bottom of Mt. Sinai, and after three days the mountain fills with smoke, the sky fills with lightening and G-d delivers the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. I think all the dramatics for the delivery of the Ten Commandments were to call the peoples' attention toward G-d, allowing them to hear G-d when G-d speaks, also showing them the importance of what they were about to receive.
In honor of my Bat Mitzvah I have purchased a variety of toys, treats, leashes and collars, and food and water bowls for the No Dog Left Behind shelter. I also, with the help of my friends, made many fleece blankets for the animals at that shelter. This project ties into my personal life because I love animals! Over the last couple summers I have spent time volunteering at Skadron Animal Hospital, and we have two toy poodles, Teeko and Bean at home. I have a special relationship with animals, value what they bring to my life, and want to share that with other people.

* This is a joke. Blair Walsh is not, as far as we know, Jewish, nor will he be attending (again, as far as we know) the World Wide Wrap, although he is, of course, welcome. |
Post-Kiddush Learning
Criminal Justice 101
Criminal Justice Reform is becoming an important topic all across the nation, but especially in Minnesota. Why is that? You can find out next Shabbat, February 6, after Kiddush. Alonzo Emen, of Mad Dads of Minneapolis, an African American community organization, and Kari E. O'Leary, a defense attorney who works with the Mille Lacs Indian Nation will discuss what it's like to be caught in the criminal justice system in our state.
