Bat Mitzvah
Hello! My name is Rachel Anne and I am in seventh grade and attend Venture Academy. My Bat Mitzvah is December 19th; however, I read Torah on December 13th for Rosh Chodesh Tevet. This parasha discusses the concept of sacrifice and the word in Hebrew is "Hakarvah". Most people would think it means sacrifice, however, it means "to draw close" or "close a gap". My tzedakah project is volunteering at the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society. This is important to me because they take in and help animals who have been abused or neglected by finding them good homes and providing medical care.

On Shabbat VaYigash, December 19, Jewish communities and individuals, organized by T'ruah, will be studying this talk given by Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, in the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin's assassination. We hope that his Torah acts as a counterbalance to recent incitement against activists in Israel.

How do we understand and express our Judaism in the 21st Century? As Jews we find ourselves compelled to respond to the challenges of our ever-changing world, scientific discovery and increased awareness of the suffering in our world. Arthur Green says that these experiences create "challenges to conventional theological views." We will use Green's book Radical Judaism to explore these ideas together and create an open space in which to share new ideas.
