A snow-covered December in the Twin Cities Jewish community serves as the backdrop for local author and publisher Sheyna Galyan's nail-biting thriller, Strength to Stand, the second novel in the Rabbi David Cohen suspense series. Come hear her discuss what Rabbi David Wolpe (Sinai Temple, Los Angeles) calls, "A smart mystery full of Jewish learning and lore."

5776 is the Year of Torah (YoT) at Beth Jacob, a year-long celebration of Torah and community. There will be many events, the highlight of which will be the restoration of one of our Sifrei Torah. Everyone can participate in this hands-on restoration project, led by Beth Jacob Congregational Educator and Sofer D. Marcos Vital.

BJUSY will join D.Marcos to continue the work of cleaning our Torah in preperation for more restoration work.
Torah Leyning Class
 Join experienced Torah leyner Phyllis Gorin as she guides us through the steps of learning to chant Torah. Graduates will be able to take on a parasha on their own and will join the ranks of our expert Torah readers. The class will culminate with a Torah Reading in March. We do ask that all learners have a working ability to read Hebrew (you don't need to know what it means, and you don't need musical talent).

Cookbook Group
 Do you get excited by reading cookbooks, the way others do with the latest novel? Do you love to try new recipes? Want to share your passion with other cookbook lovers? Join The Cookbook Bookclub (The CBBC). We'll pick a cookbook, everyone makes a different recipe, and we'll get together for dinner to taste, discuss, drink wine, and enjoy! We are sensitive to kashrut and dietary needs (most months will likely be Dairy/Pareve for simplicity). Interested? Hanukah Blessings
 In the December Kol Ya'akov that you should have recieved, there is a copy of the Hanukah brachot over the candles. The blessings contain God's name spelled out (instead of abbreviated, which is our usual custom).
Please keep the the Kol Ya'akov (or just cut out and keep the blessings to use in the future), or, if you prefer, you can bring it back to shul to put in our genizah.

USY Shabbat
Every year, BJUSY works together to lead services for a weekend. Join us as the USYers lead all of the services, many of the torah readings, participate in discussions and hear the d'var Torah on Shabbat morning by the BJUSY Israel Affairs Vice President.
On Friday night, following Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv, USYers and their families are invited to a communal Shabbat dinner at Beth Jacob, before we have a speaker join us.

As Jews we find ourselves compelled to respond to the challenges of our ever-changing world, scientific discovery and increased awareness of the suffering in our world. Arthur Green says that these experiences create "challenges to conventional theological views." We will use Green's book Radical Judaism to explore these ideas together and create an open space in which to share new ideas.
