Dr. Benjamin D. Sommer

Dr. Sommer's research focuses on the history of Israelite religion, literary analysis of the Bible, and biblical theology. An overarching concern of his scholarship involves the close and manifold relationships between biblical thought and later Jewish theology or, to use the Hebrew phrasing, between Torah shebikhtav and Torah shebe'al peh.

Mara Fink
Shabbat, May 9

Hi, I'm Mara Fink and I'm in 7th grade at Black Hawk Middle School in Eagan. I also go to Talmud Torah of St. Paul afternoon school. I live with my mom, Laurie; dad, Jason; and sister, Naomi. My favorite thing to do is swim. This year I started swimming competitively for both my school and the Riptide Swim Club.

My Parsha is Emor, which begins with the very strict rules for the Cohanim. After reading my Parsha I wondered why do the Cohanim have to be perfect if it says elsewhere in the Torah that we are all made in the image of Adonei? I've enjoyed learning with Rabbi Emma and discussing what it means to be perfect.

My tzedaka project is donating to Special Olympics Minnesota. I chose this organization because I feel that it connects to both my Parsha and my passion for swimming. It relates to Emor because it helps people with disabilities go far with something they love and gain self-confidence, and it relates to me because I love and feel very passionate about swimming.

MJTC
"Jericho" at MJTC

This powerful new play at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company looks at four thirty-something New Yorkers as they navigate the emotional aftermath of September 11. Characters struggle to make sense of their lives as they grapple with cultural identity, fraught relationships, residual guilt, and overwhelming grief. These issues come to a head as the family gathers for a holiday meal. Displaying surprising humor and wit, this thought-provoking play about living and letting go is a moving testament to survival and redemption.
