Rabbi Allen Named one of 33 Most Inspiring Rabbis

Yashar Koach & Kol HaKavod!

Rabbi Allen
The Jewish Daily Forward has released it's list of most inspiring Rabbis, including Beth Jacob's own Rabbi Allen! In his nomination of Rabbi Allen, Stuart Bear stated "...He has shown us an authentic, traditional, egalitarian approach to Judaism and our community, empowering us to "own" our Judaism. ... He has enriched me, my family, our shul, and the larger Twin Cities Jewish community, teaching us how relevant Jewish practice and observance is for today's world."

In comments on Facebook, Rabbi Allen responded: "Thank you for the good wishes on the The Jewish Daily Forward's mentioning of me in the list of inspiring rabbis. I am honored to be on the list, but in truth I am honored to represent a calling that has many inspirational folks in its ranks. Some Rabbis may be recognized for the work that they do, but in truth I could go down the list of my colleagues in the Twin Cities and across the Jewish world whose daily work and daily presence in peoples' lives is truly inspirational. For me, the really inspirational part of this story is Beth Jacob Congregation itself--a shul that has celebrated openness, affirmation and acceptance for 30 years."

Congratulations, Rabbi Allen: this honor comes as no surprise to the Beth Jacob Community!

MFFF

Help Migrant Families

scales
The Beth Jacob Social Justice Committee would like to ask for your support of the Migrant Family Food Fund, which provides fresh, nutritious produce to migrant worker families who tend to crops that they cannot afford to feed their own families. Although these workers toil in the Minnesota fields from before sunrise until after sunset, their pay is not governed by the Minnesota minimum wage bill that passed last year.

The children of these families receive breakfast and lunch in their federally funded summer school program. However, during weekends, there is little food for the children or adults. The MFFF helps fill the gap by sending backpacks of healthful food home with their children at the end of the school week.

Contributions may be mailed to or dropped off at the shul office.

It takes about 5 mintues to impact Israel. Go to votemercaz.org and vote MERCAZ Slate #2. ($10 fee to the election company; $5 for those ages 18-30).

This powerful new play at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company looks at four thirty-something New Yorkers as they navigate the emotional aftermath of September 11. Characters struggle to make sense of their lives as they grapple with cultural identity, fraught relationships, residual guilt, and overwhelming grief. These issues come to a head as the family gathers for a holiday meal. Displaying surprising humor and wit, this thought-provoking play about living and letting go is a moving testament to survival and redemption.
