Please help BJUSY as we raise awareness and support for homeless teens in Minnesota.
All funds go to support YouthLink, a shelter in Minneapolis for homeless people ages 16-23 who has partnered with us on this event for the past three years.

Ebola Conversation

 State Epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Lynfield will convene a conversation after kiddush about Ebola. This will be an opportunity to engage in an open conversation about both the disease itself and its treatment- as well as the response to it.

Introduction to Judaism

 Are you curious about Judaism? Considering conversion? Want to know more about your background? An interfaith couple?
Beth Jacob is offering our first ever comprehensive Introduction to Judaism course, taught by Rabbi Cathy Nemiroff. The course will cover fundamental concepts of Judaism, liturgy, Jewish history, the life cycle, and cycle of Holy Days. Our learning community will celebrate Shabbat with a class dinner and attendance at some Shabbat services together. The course will emphasize "Jewish doing." Couples are encouraged to attend together.

Siddur Hebrew
9:45-11 am Sun. Mornings Beginning Oct. 19
With Rachel Levitt
 For adults who can decode the Hebrew alphabet and vowels and want to deepen their understanding of Hebrew text. This course will use the book "Prayerbook Hebrew the Easy Way", which uses the language of the siddur to build learners' understanding of Hebrew vocabulary and grammar towards a real understanding of the texts we encounter most frequently in our Jewish lives. (It's actually easy!)
Course costs $100/participant; please purchase a copy of the book for yourself online in advance of the first session. As always, we do not want cost to be a barrier to participation. If cost is a problem, please contact Rabbi Morris Allen or Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman.

A Calligraphy and Scribal Arts Workshop Series
with D.Marcos Vital
 Join congregational educator and sofer (scribe) D.Marcos Vital for a 3-part workshop exploring one of the fundamental components of safrut: ritual Hebrew calligraphy. Together, we will get a taste of rabbinic rules which guide ritual calligraphy, explore some historical examples, and most importantly, get a chance to sit and practice! All ages and all levels are welcome, and no experience is necessary.

Beth Jacob Reads a Book
 Jewish Luck: Friendship and Jewish Identity Shabbat, Dec. 6th After Kiddush
Explore what it means to be Jewish friends through the lens of Jewish Luck, a 2013 book that recounts the intertwined stories of two women, Vera and Alisa, who, in their struggles against the anti-Semitism and patriarchy of the Soviet regime as well as the rebranded "New" Russia succeed by creating their own luck. Local sister co-authors Leslie Levine Adler and Meryll Page, descendants of Russian Jews who fled in the early 20th century, developed a passionate interest in Russian Studies and family history; walking through their lives with Vera and Alisa was a unique journey into their friendship and deepened the authors' connection to the women and to each other. If you immigrated from the Former Soviet Union, please bring your own insights to the discussion. Leslie can translate from Russian if you would like. Have you ever wanted to lift the Torah scroll, showing three columns of script, without dropping it? Want to perfect your havdalah ritual? Braid a gorgeous challah? Do you know how to do these things and would enjoy sharing your skill with others?
Deadline for signing up as a teacher is October 31. Teaching will be in November and December, dates and times and places to be arranged by the teacher. Students will have an opportunity to sign up once teachers have been arranged.

SHEMOT I: FROM SLAVERY TO SINAI

Instructor: Rabbi Lynn Liberman
This course brings us the Egyptian narrative of our people from "Pharaoh's Paranoia" and "Moshe's CV" to the dramatic story of our rescue, and survival in the wilderness during "Into the Sea" and "Manna from Heaven." Leadership, bravery, faith, and doubt define some of the critical moments in these texts and offer us a rich backdrop for challenging our own assumptions.
In addition to careful reading of the biblical text, participants will study a wide range of classic and modern commentaries, including artwork, to understand these extraordinary narratives.

With special guest Nancy Spielberg and honoring local hero Leon Frankel
 In 1948, St. Paul native and highly decorated WWII naval aviator, Leon Frankel joined a group of WWII pilots, mostly from the U.S., to form Israel's first air squadron the 101 and protect the newborn state against almost impossible odds in its War of Independence. As members of "Machal" volunteers from abroad this ragtag band of brothers turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth. Frankel, who bravely flew 25 missions for Israel before returning to the United States, is prominently featured in this documentary.

 Sundays open on your calendar? Sunday Fit-N-Fun is a weekly opportunity for adults ages 18+ with developmental disabilities to get together, be physically active and build friendships. Each session consists of a fitness class, a facilitated social activity and time to eat and schmooze! Designed for individuals who need minimal support; however, participants who require one-on-one attention are welcome to bring a PCA. Members and non-members are welcome, and limited transportation is available.

JFCS Grief and Loss Series
Providing supportive grief education
 Barbara Rudnick, MA, JFCS Program Manager of Family Life Education, leads the Grief and Loss Series, which is held each month through May. She has more than 30 years of experience as a group facilitator focusing on issues including loss, grief, transition and change. All sessions will be held at JFCS, 13100 Wayzata Blvd, Minnetonka. The Grief and Loss Series is presented at no charge, but donations are appreciated.
