Post-Kiddush Learning
Dr. Todd Hanneken is Associate Professor of Theology at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He teaches the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament and the history of interpretation, especially the Dead Sea Scrolls and other marginal books of early Jewish literature. He is the author of The Subversion of the Apocalypses in the Book of Jubilees and Director of the Jubilees Palimpsest Project, which develops technologies for recovering text from ancient manuscripts that are unreadable to the human eye.
After lunch Dr. Hanneken will lead a close reading of passages from the Book of Jubilees, a Halakhic rewriting of Genesis from the second century BCE that was used as scripture among the Dead Sea Scrolls but was otherwise rejected and almost lost forever. Whereas parts of Genesis might be read to portray God improvising creation and commandments in response to human weakness, Jubilees clarifies the perfection of God and the world as the unfallen fulfillment of God's plan.

Youth Director Ben Cerny checks in from "USY on Wheels"
Shalom from New Orleans,
This has been an awesome week! We finally left the Holiday Inn and embarked on our journey. We headed straight down the eastern seaboard for the Baltimore Inner Harbor, then our nation's capital. We took a tour of the Holocaust museum and held a memorial service in the Hall of Remembrance. Afterwards, when we walked around the National Mall, I met up with my parents, and we even saw Shimon Peres' motorcade on his way to a meeting with the president!!
After DC, we headed to Raleigh, North Carolina to visit their community Mikvah and learn about the process and tradition behind it. From Raleigh, we went to Charlotte, visited the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and prepared for Shabbat. Our Shabbat consisted of beautiful services, delicious food, and engaging sichot, or group discussions.
We left the Carolinas for Atlanta where we had an interesting lesson in Civil War history at the Stone Mountain Laser Show, followed the next day by a tour of CNN, centennial park, and the World of Coca-Cola. We got to New Orleans and had more sichot on topics like friendship, social justice, why bad things happen to good people, theology, civil rights, and so many more. Today we volunteered to paint a school to get it ready for opening day, toured Mardi Gras world, and walked around Jackson Square and the French Quarter. Tomorrow, we are off to Lake Charles for NASA headquarters before we go to Dallas for a tour of Cowboys Stadium and Shabbat again.
Can't wait for more adventures!
Shabbat Shalom, Ben
