"Raise the Wage"
The Social Justice Committee is bringing two speakers to help us understand the importance of the bill to raise the minimum.
Debbie Belfry, Board Member of VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People), the largest food shelf in the state, will tell us the stories about the lives of a few of her clients as they try to keep body and soul together on minimum wage.
Suzanne Bern, a small business owner, who has elected to pay her employees $10.00 per hour plus health and social security, despite the $6.15 minimum, will tell us why she has made this choice and how it affects her business.

Elliott Abrams: What Happened to the Arab Spring?
Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies, Council on Foreign Relations
Wednesday, April 2, 2014 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey School of Public Affairs 301 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis Following the December 2010 self-immolation of a fruit vendor protesting police corruption and mistreatment in Tunisia, protesters challenged authoritarian governments in countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa. While the reform process in Tunisia has continued, the process of democratic reform in the rest of the Arab world has been uncertain or non-existent. Elliott Abrams will consider events in the region since 2012, and their implications for U.S. policy. Elliott Abrams currently is a senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He previously served as deputy national security advisor for Global Democracy Strategy and senior director for Near East and North African Affairs in the administration of George W. Bush, and as assistant secretary of state for human rights in the administration of Ronald Reagan.
Free and open to the public. To request disability accommodations, please call 612-625-5309 or email hhhevent@umn.edu. Co-sponsored by the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.
