Haftarah
Preparing for the Prophets!

Starting in April, Beth Jacob will begin assigning haftarot in advance.  Every month, the first three haftarot in the month will be preassigned, and the last will be available for morning-of assignment.  With this structural change, we are hoping to hear the voices of the prophets more resoundingly during our shabbat morning services, with more of our community able to take part in reading.  Readers will have the opportunity to investigate the meaning of the text and its structure in advance, to prepare the text with its trope, and to think about how to read it in a way that conveys its message most powerfully to the community.

Everyone is encouraged to sign up:
  • Honor a special event a yahrzeit, anniversary of your bar or bat mitzvah, etc!
  • Choose to read a haftarah that particularly inspires you!
  • Take the chance to brush up on your skills!
  • Grab a moment to feel empowered!
  • Enjoy the opportunity to prepare at home!If you want help, it's available.
We will connect you with someone who will listen to you practice, or work through difficult spots. If you don't know how to read haftarah and want to learn, let us know; If there's enough interest, we'll put together a class.

Aaron Silver will be coordinating; let him know when you'd like to read by emailing haftarah@beth-jacob.org

 Educator
Beth Jacob Educator Search

Over the next few months, Beth Jacob will be searching for a dynamic Jewish educator to take the lead in further strengthening and expanding our programs in youth and family learning.  Although the exact parameters of the job will be tailored to the particular strengths of the successful candidate, we will be looking for someone to re-envision, lead and implement our youth Shabbat and holidays morning programming; to engage families with children in innovative models of family learning; to be involved with the supervision of our youth leaders; and to work with our educational partner organizations to integrate our youths' formal and informal learning contexts.

We will be searching both through formal and informal channels.  If you know anyone who might be suitable for this position, please feel free to pass their names along to David Itzkowitz, who is chairing the search: daviditzkowitz@gmail.com.

We will be updating you all on the search as it progresses.

Hag_Seder
The Haggadah and the Seder Online Course

Of all the famous lines in the Haggadah, one stands out-Why is This Night Different From All Other Nights? This is the question every child asks from the time s/he can sing a song. And the question continues to occupy adults as well-what is the meaning of all of these strange customs and prayers we say at the Seder?

In this course we shall see how the customs we still observe to this day originated and how they developed over the centuries. We shall see how the Seder was the rabbinic response to the loss of the Passover sacrifice that occurred with the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E. The historical meaning and context of key customs, reclining, drinking wine, eating appetizers, washing hands, reciting blessings and eating specific foods will be examined.  At the end of this course, the participant will be able to go to his/her seder armed with real answers-this night is different because....
