Expressions of Gratitude
We offer these brief thoughts on gratitude, one for each night, for a moment of thankful Hanukkah reflection.
Third Candle, Friday, November 29
Ben Zoma used to say: "A good guest says, 'How much my host toiled for me! He put so much meat in front of me, so much wine, so much bread - all his exertion was just for me!' A bad guest says, 'What did my host toil for me? I ate just one roll, just one piece of meat, I drank just one cup - all his exertion was for his own household!'"
-Babylonian Talmud, Berachot 58a
(translated by Alan Morinis in Everyday Holiness)
What is on your table tonight?
Fourth Candle, Saturday, November 30
We are thankful to you, Eternal our God,
For having given to our ancestors
A pleasing, ample, desirable land;
And for liberating us, Eternal One our God,
 From the land of Egypt, Redeeming us from slavery; For your covenant sealed in our flesh; For your Torah you have taught us And for your laws made known to us; For the life, grace and compassion You have so graciously bestowed upon us; And for the food we have eaten, And the nourishment you continually provide Each and every day, at every time and season. -Birkat Hamazon (translated by Ronald Aigen in Hadesh Yameinu)
What are you thankful for tonight? |

Casting Call for Young Actors!
 Young actors (ages 8 - 18) are invited to join HARMONY to participate in the upcoming production of "The Children's Republic," an original play based on the life and work of Doctor Korczak and his orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto. Performances will take place in April - May, 2014. This activity is funded, in part, by an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund. Co-sponsored by RAJMN, Genesis Philanthropy Group, and St. Paul JCC.
Janusz Korczak The great Jewish-Polish humanist Janusz Korczak was a pediatrician, professor, journalist and author, an original thinker who believed that all children are entitled to food, shelter, healthcare, and an education. In Europe before World War II, he was the equivalent of child champion and authority Dr. Benjamin Spock.
During the Holocaust, Korczak's orphanage was trapped in the walls of the Warsaw ghetto. When word spread secretly that the children of the orphanage were to be transported to a concentration camp, friends and admirers of Korczak warned him and provided the means for him to escape and save his life, but Korczak stayed with the children to the very end... "The Children's Republic," was first produced by Harmony Theatre in 2008 at the Sabes JCC.
