Representing our Community: the Art of Leading Prayer

with Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman & Benj Kamm

Monday evenings at 7 PM

 Oct. 21, 28; Nov. 4, 11

A common term for prayer leader is shaliach tzibbur, "representative of the community." In this course, we'll explore the role of davenning leader and the art of leading tefillah. What does it mean to be a "representative," and how do we navigate the relationship between leader and community? How do we build powerful prayer in community? Participants should have some previous experience leading tefillah, familiarity with the Shabbat morning service, and be interested in building their finesse.

For questions or for more information, e-mail Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman: [email protected]

Cost is $150.

Cardboard Box City

Cardboard Box City Logo- generic Every year, BJUSYers spend the night in cardboard boxes in the parking lot in solidarity with the homeless people in the world who sleep in cardboard boxes every night. This program (this year on October 26) will include an activity about falling into homelessness, a soup kitchen, and a bonfire.

If you would like to donate, please send a check to Beth Jacob earmarked for CBC; this will be donated to a local shelter or used to buy food for Dorothy Day the following morning. Thank you for helping us participate in this amazing mitzvah!

Hadassah and NCJW Oneg:

Women of the Wall

Sat., Nov. 16, 2-3:30 pm at Beth Jacob

For 25 years, the Women of the Wall movement in Israel has led the fight for equal religious rights for women at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. WoW still faces controversy and strife in its on-going quest to allow women free access to pray at this holy site. Join the St. Paul Chapter of Hadassah at its fall Oneg at Beth Jacob Synagogue when Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman, Assistant Rabbi of Beth Jacob, will lead a discussion about the inroads the WoW movement has made in protecting religious freedom in the last 25 years, the challenges it still faces and the controversy that it engenders. The Oneg will be co-sposored by the St. Paul Chapter of NCJW. Please RSVP to Sally Bans, [email protected], 651-457-6302 by November 9 if you plan to attend.

Sponsor a Family Through B'Yachad

Help us create holiday gift baskets for individuals and families in need.  Most of the items on these family's lists are very simple: Socks, frying pan, radio, flashlight...

If you would like to come by and browse through the bags so you can pick a family (or two, or three), feel free.  Otherwise, we can just assign you a family and let you know what they need.

If you would rather just purchase some items without being assigned a family, there is a collection bin in the lobby.  Monetary donations are also accepted.

For more information, contact Frances.
