Representing our Community: the Art of Leading Prayer
with Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman & Benj Kamm
Monday evenings at 7 PM
Oct. 21, 28; Nov. 4, 11
A common term for prayer leader is shaliach tzibbur, "representative of the community." In this course, we'll explore the role of davenning leader and the art of leading tefillah. What does it mean to be a "representative," and how do we navigate the relationship between leader and community? How do we build powerful prayer in community? Participants should have some previous experience leading tefillah, familiarity with the Shabbat morning service, and be interested in building their finesse.
For questions or for more information, e-mail Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman: RabbiEmma@Beth-Jacob.org

Bat Mitzvah Profile
My name is Esther Gendler. I am in 8th grade at the Minneapolis Jewish Day School. My family is my older brother in 9th grade, my younger sister in 2nd grade, a giant black lab mix and my mom and my dad. I love to play basketball, play guitar, act and sing. I am an animal lover, so my Parasha, Noach, is a great Parasha for me. I got to know more about the animals, Noach and I read some Midrashim about it. I always thought Noach was just the Parasha about Noach building the ark and taking animals on it but there was a lot more to the story. I have chosen to donate to the Humane Society for my tzedaka project because I love animals and they are very important to me. Since my Parasha is Noach which is about all the animals, it all ties together.

Sky Tinged Red is Isaia Eiger's chronicle of two-and-a-half years as a prisoner in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp during World War II, documenting the extremes of human behavior and highlighting the courage of those who maintained their humanity in a world dominated by brutality.
 | Dora & Isaia |
Bringing this story to publication after Eiger's death in 1960 took the skills and passion of family members spanning four generations, including Eiger's daughter, Dora Eiger Zaidenweber, who spent hundreds of hours translating the story from its original Yiddish. This reading brings together his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to read from and discuss this moving memoir, which is a tribute to the power of survivor testimony and the transmission of memory through successive generations.
Presented by the St. Paul JCC.
Community partners: Adath Jeshurun Congregation, Beth Jacob Congregation, Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies - University of Minnesota, Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest
