Cinema Chavurah
Join Beth Jacob's Cinema Chavurah at the Lagoon Cinema in Uptown for the 7-ish show of When Comedy Went to School on Sunday, September 29!

It will surely be filled with lots of laughs - and perhaps a good way for everyone to unwind after the New Year.  Only misgiving from Zachary is that there is no mention of his favorite comedian of all time - Dick Shawn.  Perhaps the filmmakers need to atone for their sins.  Nonetheless, should be very fun.

If you are interested in attending, just show up for the show around 7, or e-mail Zach: zsfeinstein@yahoo.com.  "We will see you at the movies!"

Also for you cinephiles, there will be a free screening and discussion of Religion.com at the St. Paul JCC on Thurs., Oct. 3rd.  Check out the details below in the Community Events section.

Noemi Schory, Schusterman Visiting Artist, University of Minnesota

Thursday, October 3, 7:00 p.m.

Free and open to the public

Noemi Schory, a renowned documentary film director and producer and current Schusterman Visiting Artist at the University of Minnesota, will show and discuss religion.com, one in a series of three films that she has produced about the Haredim (Ultra-Orthodox) in Israel. The film shows us an intense debate within the Bnei-Brak community between two men who represent opposing views of the internet. One sees the opportunity for greater freedom of expression; the other wages a struggle against what he believes will destroy their way of life. This "internet dilemma" exists for American ultra-orthodox Jews as well; some opposing its use and others finding it a powerful tool for Torah study. At the same time, for Orthodox gays and lesbians, the internet has proven invaluable in creating a world-wide community of support and understanding.

October 7 at 7:00 pm
at the St. Paul JCC
Free and open to the public

Sky Tinged Red is Isaia Eiger's chronicle of two-and-a-half years as a prisoner in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp during World War II, documenting the extremes of human behavior and highlighting the courage of those who maintained their humanity in a world dominated by brutality.

Dora & Isaia

Bringing this story to publication after Eiger's death in 1960 took the skills and passion of family members spanning four generations, including Eiger's daughter, Dora Eiger Zaidenweber, who spent hundreds of hours translating the story from its original Yiddish. This reading brings together his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to read from and discuss this moving memoir, which is a tribute to the power of survivor testimony and the transmission of memory through successive generations.

Presented by the St. Paul JCC.

Community partners: Adath Jeshurun Congregation, Beth Jacob Congregation, Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies - University of Minnesota, Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest
