Searching for Gold in the Diaspora Desert:
Understanding Ourselves Through a Search for Our Ancestors
Saturday, March 2, During Services
A box of unpublished manuscripts by South St. Paul resident David Blumenfeld, written in the 1920s, was recently discovered after being lost for more than 50 years. The best of these volumes is a semi-fictionalized family story, commencing in Latvia in the 1800s and following the family's immigration to the midwest in the 1880s. Several of David's descendants recently traveled to Latvia and Lithuania, to visit the home towns of their ancestors and to discover what remains of the Jewish history of the Baltic region.
On March 2nd, during services, before the Kiddush luncheon hosted by their family in loving memory of their father Marcus Hertz, Fred Hertz will some present their reflections on their trip. Their talk will focus on the strategies they used to search out Jewish Latvia, the Jewish places they saw, and the lessons they have learned from their discovery of the alternative migration paths taken by others from their family. | Finding David Blumenfeld: From South St. Paul to Tukums, Latvia |
Check out this YouTube video of an extended version of the talk, or, if you can't stand spoilers, wait to check it out after this Shabbat!

 New Cinema Chavurah
Sun, March 10, 7 pm
Beth Jacob is proud to announce the formation of the Cinema Chavurah! It is for cinema enthusiasts who wish to informally get together and share their passion for good, or not so good, films.
Our first meeting will be at the Minneapolis Jewish Film Festival to see Paris Manhattan. It is a French comedy about, who else but, Woody Allen! Rumor has it that a very famous filmmaker makes a cameo in the film too!
Please note that the Cinema Chavurah will choose another movie to attend in about another month. Any suggestions are welcome. And they do not need to be of Jewish content.
Please e-mail Zach Feinstein (zsfeinstein@yahoo.com) to let him know if you and/or others will be coming, want to carpool, or need a ride. Feel free to just show up. We will see you at the movies!

 A Hunger Seder
"Let all who are hungry enter and eat."
Wednesday, March 6th at 7:30 p.m.
Ritual Passover foods provided. No Dinner will be served. There is no charge for this event.
Passover celebrates the transition from Slavery to Freedom. We believe that this is intimately connected to the issue of hunger in the US today. How can we expect ALL Minnesota students to achieve when some go hungry? With these connections between freedom and hunger, surrounded by the words of the Haggadah, we will have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussion about the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition, and what we can do about these collectively. We will join with our partners, supportive legislators and anyone interested in eradicating hunger to reflect on Passover themes that inform our efforts and on issues relating to hunger.
