Searching for Gold in the Diaspora Desert:
Understanding Ourselves Through a Search for Our Ancestors
Saturday, March 2, During Services
A box of unpublished manuscripts by South St. Paul resident David Blumenfeld, written in the 1920s, was recently discovered after being lost for more than 50 years. The best of these volumes is a semi-fictionalized family story, commencing in Latvia in the 1800s and following the family's immigration to the midwest in the 1880s. Several of David's descendants recently traveled to Latvia and Lithuania, to visit the home towns of their ancestors and to discover what remains of the Jewish history of the Baltic region.
On March 2nd, during services, before the Kiddush luncheon hosted by their family in loving memory of their father Marcus Hertz, Fred Hertz will some present their reflections on their trip. Their talk will focus on the strategies they used to search out Jewish Latvia, the Jewish places they saw, and the lessons they have learned from their discovery of the alternative migration paths taken by others from their family.

Jewish Women's Morning at the Capitol
This Wednesday, February 20, 8:45am-3:00pm
Jewish Women's Morning at the Capitol (JWMC), organized annually by the National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah, is joining forces with the Minnesota Choice Coalition's Pro-Choice Lobby Day. As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade and a pro-choice majority in the Senate for the first time in decades, we can look forward to advancing women's reproductive healthcare and defending our rights to reproductive choice. That's why for this year's JWMC we have decided to stand together with the Choice Coalition to ensure that reproductive healthcare is included in Minnesota's Healthcare Exchange under the Affordable Care Act. Join us for this incredible opportunity to meet your legislators as we stand together to move Minnesota's women forward. Schedule: - 8:45am for breakfast and a legislative update
- 10:00 for "Lobbying 101" and an education session on Choice in Faith-Based Communities, Inequity and Access, or Starting the Conversation
- 11:00 for an inspirational rally in the rotunda followed by our Jewish Women's Luncheon
- 12:30 for lobbying appointments with your legislators
We hope you will stay all day (8:45am-3:00pm) but feel free to join in as your schedule allows. The event is free and open to everyone, but registration is required. |
