Emtza Region Winter Shabbaton
This weekend, Beth Jacob will be hosting over 120 USYers and staff members from around Emtza Region at the annual USY Winter Shabbaton! The USYers will join us for Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat morning services. On Shabbat morning, they'll all be sitting together in Section D of the sanctuary. We recognize that it will be a different setup from most Shabbatot, and we're asking for your help as we welcome them!

We daven and then we eat. But there's more to it than that. Some of us come just in time for kiddush; some of us shmooze all afternoon. Some of us are grateful to hang with other grownups while our kids get lunch; some of us look forward to those kitchen duty calls all year. We meet new people; we visit with old friends. We talk with a lot of people, or just a few. We share what's on our hearts or kibbitz about whatever playoffs are coming up next. Kiddush is our space and time for connecting as a community, and how we are at kiddush is an expression of our values.
Come talk with other Beth Jacob folks about how you spend your kiddush -- what you love and what you wish for -- and what we create together as a community in our hour together on shabbes afternoons.
Babysitting will be available.

Looking for our Past & Finding the Present:
The Politics of our Baltic Roots Tour
Saturday, March 2, During Services
A box of unpublished manuscripts by South St. Paul resident David Blumenfeld, written in the 1920s, was recently discovered after being lost for more than 50 years. The best of these volumes is a semi-fictionalized family story, commencing in Latvia in the 1800s and following the family's immigration to the midwest in the 1880s. Several of David's descendants recently traveled to Latvia and Lithuania, to visit the home towns of their ancestors and to discover what remains of the Jewish history of the Baltic region.
On March 2nd, during services, and before the Kiddush luncheon hosted by their family in loving memory of their father Marcus Hertz, Deborah and Fred Hertz will present their reflections on their trip. Their talk will focus on the strategies they used to search out Jewish Latvia, the Jewish places they saw, and the people they encountered, as well as the insights they have gleaned from the complex history, politics, and social dynamics of their discoveries.

Freedom to Marry Day Rally
3pm, Thursday, Feb. 14, State Capitol Rotunda
Come join Jewish Community Action, J-Pride and Minnesotans United for All Families for the Freedom to Marry Day Rally. For the first time this year marriage proponents, led by clergy and faith leaders, will pack the rotunda of the State Capitol Building to ensure that in 2013 Minnesota state law is changed to reflect our shared belief that loving and committed same-sex couples should have the freedom to marry. Join with hundreds of others in showing legislators that a broad and diverse coalition of Minnesotans support marriage for same-sex couples. RSVP online, invite friends and family and spread the word via the facebook event.

Jewish Women's Morning at the Capitol
Wednesday, February 20, 8:45am-3:00pm
Jewish Women's Morning at the Capitol (JWMC), organized annually by the National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah, is joining forces with the Minnesota Choice Coalition's Pro-Choice Lobby Day. As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade and a pro-choice majority in the Senate for the first time in decades, we can look forward to advancing women's reproductive healthcare and defending our rights to reproductive choice. That's why for this year's JWMC we have decided to stand together with the Choice Coalition to ensure that reproductive healthcare is included in Minnesota's Healthcare Exchange under the Affordable Care Act. Join us for this incredible opportunity to meet your legislators as we stand together to move Minnesota's women forward. Schedule: - 8:45am for breakfast and a legislative update
- 10:00 for "Lobbying 101" and an education session on Choice in Faith-Based Communities, Inequity and Access, or Starting the Conversation
- 11:00 for an inspirational rally in the rotunda followed by our Jewish Women's Luncheon
- 12:30 for lobbying appointments with your legislators
We hope you will stay all day (8:45am-3:00pm) but feel free to join in as your schedule allows. The event is free and open to everyone, but registration is required. |
