From Rabbi Allen The following letter was written by many of my colleagues in Westchester County, New York. I am sending this out because I believe it both captures an appropriate tone for discussion in our community around the recent UN vote, and because it is important that we recognize that speaking about difficult subjects is alway still preferable to ignoring them. It is true that the Palestinian decision to go to the UN was in violation of the agreements spelled out in the Oslo Accord which has defined Israeli-Palestinian negotiations since 1992. In the ensuing 21 years, we are not yet close to peace and people on both sides believe that perhaps the framework of Oslo has reached a tragic end-point. For those of us committed to a strong, vibrant and democratic Israel and to a secure non-militarized Palestinian state, the last few years have been filled with sadness. We stand with Israel in her defense, just as we are willing to offer criticism about some of her policies as they relate to religious pluralism and tolerance. Many of us spend countless hours worrying about this situation and engaged in activities addressing the content of Israel's soul. For Israel to remain a uniquely democratic Jewish state, we understand that the present arrangement with the Palestinians cannot continue. Working towards peace is messy. It is complicated by a Middle East that is a tinderbox from Egypt to Syria. The fear of a nuclear Iran remains a real fear. Yet, paralysis is not an option. Israel will hold elections in January. I pray that opportunities for moving towards a peaceful resolution of this conflict are addressed by those political parties running and that Israel's electorate votes its hopes, and not simply its fears.
