A Better Me

Last month, I told you about our family tradition of having a Birthday Bag for Jesus in front of our Christmas tree and inviting family and guests to give a Birthday Present to Jesus. I also spoke on that topic at our churches Women's Christmas Dinner and we had birthday cards available for each woman to give her birthday present to Jesus this year. If you'd like to read more about How to Have a Birthday Party for Jesus, I wrote a blog about that last month.

My grandchildren were at the Women's Dinner to help me by acting out the manger scene during my talk. They wanted to give Jesus a birthday present too and wrote out their gifts on a Birthday Card. When I took out the cards to pray over them later that night, I saw my 9-year-old granddaughter Katelyn's birthday present to Jesus was: "a better me."

Wow! What an insightful and humble gift to our Lord. Katelyn was baptized last year, and it's evident that she's growing in her faith and spiritual maturity. Isn't "a better me" what we all want? Isn't that why we set goals and resolutions? But do we pray, "Lord let me be a better me for You? Or are we trying to be a better me for our own benefit?

I would ask you to ponder this New Year: Are your efforts and time focused on bettering your earthly life or furthering God's kingdom on earth? The answer to that question helps set our priorities in all areas of life: time, finances, energy, health, ministry . . .

Being "a better me" to further God's kingdom is a meaningful goal for mentoring relationships too: you'll both grow closer to the Lord as you help each other become a better you for Jesus!

Instead of wishing you a Happy New Year, I'd like to encourage each of you to make it a Christ-centered New Year and then I know you will be happy, happy, happy!

"Hanging Out" with the Grandkids

I've talked before about keeping current on the technology our grandkids are using such as email, texting, and maybe with older kids, even

Facebook messaging to stay in touch with them.

Three of our grandkids received inexpensive tablets for Christmas that came with a contract they had to sign and agree to before they could take ownership. Some of you might like to do something similar with your kids. You can find a template at All Pro Dad under the "Training Tools" tab.

Their parents also added the app screentime, to their tablets. It has features that allow parents to block certain apps, and set interface windows where select apps are only available, and then all apps shut down after a user defined time. You could also apply this to cell phones.

What I LOVED about the kid's tablets is that their daddy set up Google+ Hangout so they can call or video chat with me for free. On Brandon's 10th birthday, I "hungout" with him before he went to school. It was so sweet to see his smile, and him see mine, as I sang Happy Birthday to him. We can also message each other through the Hangout app, which I have on my tablet, computer, and cell phone.

BTW you can  with adults too LOL!

I endorsed this book and was impressed with the authors' vulnerability and wisdom. The Millers are friends of mine and we chatted about their book...

Why did you write this non-fiction book?

After God did a heart-purifying work in our lives, we wanted to share with others how they could also enjoy the benefits of increasing godly living like love, patience, wisdom, and ability to minister to the needs of others. One of the important aspects of the work God did in us was revealing the underlying, seemingly hidden reasons, for the choices we made. Most of the time, any ungodly choices seemed beyond our control and reasonable. But by facing our selfish and self-protective motives, we could surrender to God's desires for us more quickly and easily.

What does your book offer?

We share a lot of stories of our own struggles and others. We also use biblical principles, instruction, and discussion questions that can be used for individuals or groups. Our book helps others discover "Why do I do what I do?"and then trust God more to make godly choices.

Tell us something about yourselves.

A: We have been married 44 years. Larry is a retired police lieutenant, speaker, writer and men's Bible study teacher. Kathy is a writer and speaker. We speak individually and together on a variety of topics. When we speak together we speak on marriage and we also share the principles we learned during our recent time of heart change. We are also lay-counselors and that is a great joy to help others learn greater trust in God.

How can our readers reach you?

Our website; or Kathy's blog. We live in Southern California but we travel both nationally and internationally for ministry, or Email us

Never Ever Be the Same is available at your local bookstore and at Amazon; CBD; and Barnes and Noble .

If you would like to know how to have a "heart change" and be entered in a drawing to win a copy of the Millers' book, contact me.

Congratulations to Maria Crow, last month's winner of Live Original, by Sadie Robertson.
