What's Love Got to Do with It?

Last week, we had our three Idaho grandkids at our house for four days while mommy and daddy enjoyed some time together celebrating sixteen years of marriage and love. Knowing that the weather was turning cold so we and the kids would mostly be confined to the house, I started praying several weeks prior to their arrival for God to show me how to make this a meaningful and memorable time for Brandon (9), Katelyn (9) and Sienna (6). I also asked our Couples Bible study group and Parents/Grandparents of Prodigals Support group to pray for us.

My prayer since we first became grandparents sixteen years ago is that Dave and I leave a legacy through our grandchildren of what it means to love Jesus and live out that love in our daily lives. I'm always looking for ways to help the grandkids understand what it means to be a Christian and follower of Jesus.

So as I prayed about the upcoming four days with the kids, and our groups were praying for us, the ideas started coming. In Grammie's Corner below, I share some of those ideas the Lord gave me that might help you with your kids, or when your grandkids come to visit this holiday season-or anytime!

I want to feature here one of them that centers around the picture above of MOM'S Canned Questions and MOM'S Delicious Devotional Questions. Some of you might remember speaker/author Emilie Barnes who has a ministry on using time wisely and loving your family wisely. Emilie spoke at Saddleback Church probably 20 years ago. Since I was newly married and blending a family, I attended and purchased the MOM'S jars from her book table. These were a product of "MOM'S Family Preserves-Preserving the Family Through Communication." Since this was before websites, I haven't been able to locate them to give you a link, but you could easily make them.

The jars are full of questions and Scriptures for discussion. I used these jars as communication starters around the dinner table as Dave's three kids and my Kim all became acquainted. When they left home, I stashed the jars away for safekeeping. I came across them recently and knew these would be a great way to get the grandkids to sit and talk while everyone finished their dinner, so I brought them out during the grandkid's four-day visit. They loved answering the questions. The questions are for all ages so they had a good laugh with the one that asked, "What makes an ideal husband?" And when Katelyn got the one asking, "What makes an ideal wife?" she promptly answered "Mommy!"

Then six-year old Sienna got the question: "What does it mean to love someone?" She thought for a minute and answered tentatively, "Being nice to them?" I said you certainly would be nice to someone you loved, but you love your family . . . are you always nice to them? That stumped her.

Then Katelyn said, "Loving like Jesus loves us." And that gave us something to talk about. I wish now that I would have gone to the "Love chapter," 1 Corinthians 13, in the Bible and read to them the true meaning of love. I'll remember that next time.

I love these kids to the moon and back, and would lay down my life for each one . . .just like Jesus did for those He loved.

"What does love have to do with it?" sang Tina Turner.

Love has EVERYTHING to do with "it!"

Happy Thanksgiving dear friends to you and those you love to the moon and back!

November is National Adoption Month

National Adoption Day 2014 is November 22. This precious little guy, my grandson Brandon, became part of our forever family on National Adoption Day November 21, 2005. You can read Brandon's story in Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby?, along with 45 couples who share their infertility story to encourage and give hope to other couples. The holidays can be painful for a couple wanting a family. Learn what not to say to those couples and the couples learn a kind response. This book would make a thoughtful gift. Infertile couples say they are the loneliest in churches--there's something wrong with that! Let's love on those couples and pray for God to bless them with a family.

Mentoring Ministry Testimony

Hi Janet,

We have just started our second group after having a pilot group. We used our women's retreat to introduce the mentoring ministry and asked for ladies from that group to sign-up and be our test group. We had our potluck at the end of September and, while not everyone was able to make it, those that did shared stories of spiritual growth and new friendships. We had a couple of medical challenges where two ladies spent extended time in the hospital for different reasons. One was a prayer warrior who felt led to become a mentor for the next group, and she is really excited.

This new group has a very military flavor with most of them being military wives and the younger ones needing new friends as well as good Christian mentors to walk with them. It was really interesting as everyone introduced themselves, including all of the ladies that were helping or were there as prayer warriors. We had one younger military wife that just joined our Women's Ministry team and she hadn't filled out the profile card. One of the other ladies expressed interest in mentoring her on her profile card so we called her and asked her if she would be willing to be a mentee and she said she would. So we paired them up.

There were a couple of us that have had a burden for some time for our younger women/teen girls that are wandering. I spent some time looking for resources that we would be able to use to help our women and found your kit through Lifeway. Thank you for allowing God to use you in developing this material.

Blessings to you ,

Eva Husted

   "GRAMMIE'S CORNER"

Here's a few more things we did with the grandkids when they were here for four days:

One of our Parents of Prodigals Support Group members told us about a book, Little Visits with God that she used with her kids and she even went to the church library and brought it over to us. This book was AMAZING. Just like the Bible . . . which is timeless...this book was written in 1957 and is still so applicable to kids today because it has stories based on a Bible verse with discussion questions to talk over with the kids. We pulled this book out every time there was a "tiff" and used it for a morning and evening devotional. The kids were eager to answer the questions and apply the biblical principle of the story to their lives. It was so effective that Dave ordered a copy from Amazon, which was the Golden Anniversary Edition, and said on the cover "Loved by parents and children for 50 years". We highly recommend this little book!

We also went to the library, where they checked out 7 Veggie Tales movies, and shopped at our 2nd hand store "Granny's". We enjoyed our church's family night where Brandon challenged our pastor to foosball and Sienna had just the right-sized opponent for air hockey.

We made Fall cutout cookies and birthday cards for their Sunday School teacher, played games, sampled their first pomegranate which the girls loved, set up our Christmas manger scene and practiced their part in helping me speak at our churches women's Christmas dinner, and Facetimed on my phone with their cousin Grace (our granddaughter) in Colorado.

Katelyn practiced with Grampa to be in the church Christmas sing-along, and we ate lots of pasta, burritos, chili, make-your-own pizzas (didn't go over so well) cookies, ice-cream drumsticks, and pancakes, which they say mine are like cupcakes.

It definitely was a meaningful and memory making four days!

Jenny Lee Sulpizio is a fellow mentor mom on The M.O.M. Initiative team and she has a new book  For the Love of God: A Woman's Guide to Finding Faith and Getting Grace.

I asked Jenny questions about her new book . . .

What inspired you to write this book? Why did you want to reach out to new believers and/or those struggling in their walk with God?

Plain and simple: I've been there.  In fact, I resisted a relationship with the Lord for so, so long. Despite His best efforts to get my attention. Despite the emptiness I felt and the longing I had. I understand those feelings of fear when it comes to walking with the Lord, the uncertainty one has when it comes to seeking their Creator, and I wanted to provide these women the encouragement they need as they seek God and what it means to be His daughter.

Why do you think so many people struggle when it comes to the issue of discipling? Why is it so hard to talk about Jesus?

Honestly, I struggle with this at at times and I'm not sure of all the reasons why. But here's what I do know...we are called to disciple and make His Name known. We are absolutely commissioned by God to defend Christ, to share His gift of salvation, and to disciple to others in the faith. That is why we are here. In fact, this is our entire purpose on Earth...not to shine the light on ourselves or live this life for our desires and plans, but to live solely for Christ and to share the Gospel with those He places in our circles of influence.

This guide you've written for women is basically divided into two parts: introducing the key elements of faith, as well as what the Christian walk typically looks like. Can you discuss this a little bit more and what your intention was in structuring it this way?

When I decided to head back to church, I didn't have a clue about anything to do with having a relationship with Jesus. I wasn't aware of the nuts and bolts of faith. I didn't know which direction to take after walking through those church doors. I desperately needed someone or something to walk with me on this journey, to calm my fears, to see me through my struggles, and to answer some of the questions I was too scared to ask. This was the book I needed. These are the words I needed to hear...the reassurance I desired.
