What Legacy Are You Leaving?
Many of you have heard my "Feed my sheep" testimony of how God called me to start the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry, in spite of my inadequacies and misgivings. For starters, I had no idea what the word "mentor" meant when a woman in the company I worked for asked me on voicemail if I would mentor her. I was clueless. Whenever I tell my "Feed my sheep" story or write about it, I always share how I told this woman I would get back to her and then went to the local Christian bookstore to buy a book on mentoring.
The Lord led me to Lucibel Van Atta's book, Women Encouraging Women: Who Will Disciple Me?. I devoured that book, writing out answers to every question she asked and filling in every blank! I then called my co-worker back and told her I thought I now understood how to mentor her. Several weeks later, one of my stepdaughter's friends asked me to mentor her and I pulled out Lucibel's book and said, "I just read this book, and yes, I can mentor you!"
I honestly thought that was all there was to feeding God's sheep. I had no idea He had a much bigger plan for me that included starting the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry.
I used to travel with Lucibel's book and show it when I shared my "Feed my sheep" story, but when the book went out of print, I was afraid of losing it so I keep this prized and cherished book on my bookshelf but still talk about reading Lucibel's book. I just talked about her book last week at the San Diego You Lead Conference and will again this week at the Billings, MT You Lead Conference and every time I share the story of how God birthed the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry.
So it was a shock when I saw the following Facebook post from my friend and fellow author Poppy Smith. I had no idea Poppy knew Lucibel, but they both live in Portland, OR:
Visited Lucibel (Lucki) Van Atta yesterday. She is on hospice for congestive heart failure but her clear mind and intelligent conversation about aging, working through the dying process, and the joy of seeing the Lord blessed me. Lucki was one of the first authors to tell me I should write what I teach. Remember the song: "May all who come behind us find us faithful." I'm so glad to know women who inspire me to be faithful.
I asked Poppy to please tell Lucibel my story and share with her how her legacy continues with every woman who has ever been, or will be, in Woman to Woman Mentoring. Lucibel only wrote this one book, (and coauthored another book), but reading Women Encouraging Women changed my life and the lives of thousands of M&M's around the world. (Read the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry testimony below).
I've never had the honor of meeting "Lucki", but what a legacy she leaves through my life and ministry, and all the lives she has touched personally and through her book and articles. She will be blessing lives even after she is gone. I hope we all can say the same when it's time for us to see the Lord face to face!

We each tell our story along with numerous other mommies- and daddies-in-waiting. My prayer is that this book will be a mentor, a record keeper, a journal, a devotional, a prayer guide, and a friend.

Addressing a variety of situations and stories from other mommies- and daddies-in-waiting, these three women open up their very personal questions and feelings through many facets of infertility experiences presented in easy-to-read topical segments. I first became acquainted with the Woman to Woman Mentoring program in September 2004 when we moved from Germany to Stafford, VA. Being a military family, we move every 2-3 years and I have learned that you have to get settled and involved in a church right away, otherwise the years pass quickly and it is time to move again! I started off as a mentee in the program, but quickly learned that I too could walk alongside another sister in the Lord and mentor as well. I participated in the program there for 3 years, and then at my next church I eventually took over the leadership of their Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry .
In 2012, the Lord moved us to Bangkok, Thailand where my husband works with the U.S. Embassy. We quickly joined and became involved with Evangelical Church of Bangkok and I was asked to join the Women's Ministry Leadership Team. I talked to the leaders about starting the Woman to Woman Mentoring program since it was not something offered here, and it was a ministry I felt passionately about! They were excited to give it a try and I ordered the Leader's Kit and started preparing for our first Coffee.
Although the Leadership Kit equipped me very well to start the mentoring program, there were some challenges with doing it in Bangkok. First, it was difficult trying to fit the program within the confines of our weekly Women's Ministry meetings, "Oasis". Living in Bangkok- a city of 6+ million makes transportation difficult, and we knew we could reach the most women having it during our already scheduled Oasis meetings. Second, our church has a congregation from over 40 different nations, so we had to consider intercultural communication and possible issues arising from pairing women from different nations.
So far, we have had 3 Coffees and over 40 Mentor/Mentee pairs that we have seen God richly bless and lives' enriched from their participation in the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry.
Thank you Janet for providing such a needed resource and above all to our Lord and Savior for the blessings he has poured out on our diverse group of women who are truly taking the command in Titus 2 to heart! ----Angela Culpepper

"GRAMMIE'S CORNER"
Two Little Miracles
We had a great time earlier this month with our Orange County, CA grandkids, Josh and Jordan, and their mommy, Shannon. For any who have read Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby?, Shannon shares her story of infertility and secondary infertility. These two precious children are God's gifts to her and to our family. Even though they are six years apart, they still have lots of fun together.
It's hard having grandkids that live so far away from us-of our 11-only three live near. But we make sure to see them all regularly and stay in contact, so it's a blessing to us when they each run into our arms, no matter how long it's been since we last saw each other.

Meet An Author
Rush of Heaven by Cheryl Ricker
My author friend Cheryl Ricker tells the miracle healing story of Ema McKinley, who was confined to a wheelchair after a tragic accident. Cheryl sent me a copy of this creative Nonfiction book and I asked her some questions about this amazing story:
What's your favorite scene in Rush of Heaven?
That's a tough one because I love all the scenes, I really do. But I'll tell you my husband's favorite scene. I think I like it best because it made him cry the most. (And I love making my husband cry.)
We both love when Ema surprises her sons and grandsons after her miracle healing on Christmas Eve.
Since she had been crooked and confined to a wheelchair before she had grandchildren, they'd never seen her any other way. Then, all of sudden, they're shocked out of their minds to see her standing in front of them upright. She then wrapped them in one of those full-fledged frontal grandma hugs for the very first time. Definitely a grab-your-tissues moment. Yes, ok I admit it: I thrive on making people emotional wrecks.
Are you anything like Ema McKinley? Was it difficult to get inside her head and write her story?
We have some wild similarities. But even so, Ema and I are very different in the way we think, act, and speak.
I wouldn't say it was "difficult" to get in her mind though. I just needed to "learn" it-like the way an actor learns her character. You study your character so you can step inside. You dive deep. It's art.
It got to the point where I could switch into my Ema character whenever I sat down to write. I've always liked acting; and to me, writing is like acting on paper.
By the time I finished, Ema said, "It's like we're one voice." And when she read my words, she couldn't tell us apart. Mission accomplished.
What do you want your readers to take away from this book?
I want readers to know that God is right there in the midst of their problems. He wants them to take hold of his hand and trust him with everything, especially the things that concern them most.
I want people to know that you can't put God in a box. He can do anything, and of course, he still heals today. He never changes.

Do you have another book in the works? Tell us about it.
Yes, I'm pleased to say I do. It's another true miracle story. It's about an amazing little autistic boy who can't talk. His mother is desperate to connect with him and prays he'll find his voice. The Lord answers in an unexpected way when the seven year old types a stream of profound sentences on his iPad, revealing his deep connection with God.
In the same way that God clearly spoke to Ema and said, "pick Cheryl to write this book," He likewise spoke to this little boy, saying that I'm meant to write this.
God had already revealed this to me, so here we go again... Spreading our wings to embrace another powerful miracle story.
Thanks for having me today, Janet! God's continued blessings to you!
