About His Work with Janet                      June/July 2014

What do you do when you show up at a dinner wearing almost the same skirt? Take a picture of course!

I Need Your Stories!

"You should write a trade book about mentoring!" the editor told me at the International Christian Retail Show in 2006.

"You should write a trade book about mentoring!" the agent told me at the International Christian Retail Show last month!

Do you think God is trying to get my attention? I do, and I'm listening. I so want to do His will.

Now I need your help. If you've followed me for any time, you know that my passion is mentoring-Sharing Life's Experiences and God's faithfulness. Since I wrote Woman to Woman Mentoring: How to Start, Grow, and Maintain a Mentoring Ministry in 1997, God has been starting mentoring ministries in churches all over the world (over 4600 to date), and mentors and mentees (M&M's) have been experiencing the blessings of mentoring. Praise God!!

Over the years, many ministry leaders have sent me stories about starting the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry, and many M&M's have sent me their stories too; but I also know there are many untold stories that would bless my readers. Will you help me write this book? Here's what I could use:

1. What would you want to read about in a mentoring book? What would encourage you to be a mentor or mentee? I would love it if you simply emailed me your thoughts.

2. If you've been in a mentoring relationship-either as a mentor or mentee or both-would you tell me your story? Even if it didn't go like you planned.

No word count or specific requirements...just send me whatever God puts on your heart. I will only use first names, or if you prefer, I can use a pseudo name.

I know God is smiling that I've finally paid attention to His call. In the beginning, I thought writing resources to help start mentoring ministries and then teaching and training about mentoring was all God was calling me to do. But He's also been gently nudging me that there's more mentoring work to do!

By the way, we now have all the Woman to Woman Mentoring Resources available on our website shop. Even if your local LifeWay bookstore is out of stock, or LifeWay customer service says they're out-of-stock, we have plenty of everything and I sign every book we send out.

I hope to see many of you at one of the three LifeWay YOU Lead Conferences I'm teaching at in 2014: Wheat Ridge, CO is July 24-25. San Diego, CA-October 9-10th. Billings, MT-October 23-25.

Together we can reach, encourage, and teach what we've been taught to the next generation.

The little one in the pink dress wearing Grampa's cowboy hat is our granddaughter Katelyn, and on the other end of the row is her brother Brandon and sister, Sienna. Right in the middle in the cowboy hat is Miss Nancy. Miss Nancy and Miss Connie (in the pink jacket sitting behind Brandon) lead the Sunday school and VBS programs at Crouch Community Church.

My grandkids were only able to attend the last two days of VBS because their school wasn't out yet when it started. But Miss Nancy had made a CD for them of all the songs and welcomed them as if they had been there all week!

5 year-old Sienna said about Miss Nancy: "Miss Nancy is always smiling and she's always so happy to see us when we're here for Sunday school!"

Miss Nancy and Miss Connie love on all the kids in their care and make each one feel welcome, even if they don't attend every week. My grandkids LOVE to go to our church. I'm so grateful for Sunday school teachers who are helping to lead the next generation to Christ. What a legacy!

101 Tips for the Smart Stepmom
by Laura Petherbridge

Laura Peterbridge and I sat in a couple of comfy chairs last month in Atlanta at ICRS and chatted about her new book. Being a stepmom myself, I had some questions for her ...

1. Who should read 101 Tips for The Smart Stepmom?

This book is written for any woman dating, engaged, or married to a man with children. The book makes a fabulous shower or wedding gift for the soon-to-be bride, because most stepmoms say to me, "I wish I'd had this information before I got married."

2. How are a stepmom's issues different from a biological mom's issues?

A stepmom faces unique challenges in that she fills a mom-like role in a co-parenting home, and yet, she isn't the mother. Learning what is and is NOT her role often causes confusion, frustration, and sadness for the stepmom. She seeks information on how to
cope with the ever-changing atmosphere.

3. What are the issues facing a stepfamily that may not be present in a first-time family?

All stepfamilies are birthed out of loss. A death or divorce has occurred, and this likely launched a variety of emotions, including fear, pain, grief, and anger. How the family members dealt with or didn't deal with those fragile emotions plays a significant role in the strength of a stepfamily.

4. You have a chapter entitled "When Hubby Is Stuck." Why would a husband get stuck in a stepfamily?

It's common for the husband in a stepfamily to feel torn between his wife and his children. If he makes his kids happy, his wife is unhappy. If he does first what his wife wants, his kids are angry. He feels like he can't win and often wants to give up. This chapter provides problem-solving information for the stepmom so that she and her husband can work as a unified team.

5. You address the stepmom who has her stepchildren full time. Talk about her role.

The full-time stepmom is in a radically different position from the part-time stepmom. This woman becomes responsible to fill the void and console the grief that results from an absent mother. This growing situation occurs when the mother has died, abandoned her children, is addicted to a substance, is mentally ill, or is unstable and unsuitable to parent a child.

6. You list things that kids wish they could say to their stepmom. How did you obtain that information?

My parents divorced when I was eight. My dad remarried twice, so I had two stepmoms growing up, plus a stepdad. That, coupled with more than 25 years in divorce recovery ministry, provided me with more than enough information to share with stepmoms on
the positive and negative things that young and adult kids wish they could say to their stepmom.
