Love Song Couples Getaway-Take Two!

If you've been following me through my newsletters, Facebook, and blogs, you know that my husband Dave and I went on our first Love Song Couples Getaway last year in Maui. I wrote a blog about what led us to go on this amazing trip and the blessing it was to us as a Christian couple. I also shared how our holding hands to pray while on the trip led to making new friends, many of which we've kept in contact with even though they live in different states!

The last night of the Maui getaway, they announced the Bahamas as an addition to their 2014 trips. Dave was out of his seat signing us up and we've been budgeting and saving all year.

Well, we just returned from yet another amazing encounter with each other and with God at the 2014 Love Song Couples Getaway! We again have made new friends from all over the USA and met couples from our own state. Gary Chapman was the keynote speaker, and if you ever get a chance to hear him in person, he's an awesome communicator . . . and funny. Mac Powell of Third Day, Brandon Heath, and John Micah led our worship and performed concerts. I'll be sharing more about this year's experiences, along with pictures, in my Monday Morning Blogs, so if you haven't signed up yet to receive the blog, you can do so now.

To salt you for upcoming blogs, here is what one wife said about their time at the Love Song Couples Getaways, "We met so many great couples, created a closer bond with two couples - adding to several from last year. For us... It's renewing, rejuvenating, rewarding, re-energizing in all levels. We love these trips."

If you're married, I would encourage you to getaway to a couple's retreat that fits your budget and schedule...well you might have to stretch both...but your marriage is the earthly replica of Christ's relationship with the church. Dave and I are now on a fixed income and we sacrificed to make an investment in our marriage and spiritual walk.

If you're single, find a spiritual retreat or conference to just getaway from the franticness of life and spend time with fellow believers and the Lord. Is your church having a retreat or conference or is one coming to your town? Go!

Pastor Jim Wright from Oregon was another speaker at our getaway and next to the following comment, I wrote the word Mentoring: "Learn from the experience of others. You don't have to learn everything the hard way. Only God can give victory! Choose to remind each other that we are totally dependent on Jesus to live life to its fullest, not just exist."

Go for it! Live life to the fullest in Christ and help others learn to do the same.

Praying For Your Prodigal Daughter Hope Help and Encouragement
for Hurting Parents

In Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter, Chris Adams shares the heartbreak of her daughter Alycia's troubled years and not knowing where Alycia was or if she was even alive. As I was writing the last chapter of the book, Alycia reached out to her parents and today Alycia has returned to her family and to God. Alycia shares her encouraging testimony in the May 18th Monday Morning Blog, Never Stop Praying For Your Prodigal You probably know someone . . .a parent or a prodigal . . . who needs to read this story and read this book.

I also suggest using the book to form a support group.

There are questions at the end of each chapter and helps on my website. We weren't meant to go through crises alone!

Mentoring Ministry Testimony

M&M's Serving Together for 19 years!

M&M's Priscilla Beissel and Linda Egan share how they set goals for their M&M relationship in the Woman to Woman Mentoring Mentor Handbook (pg. 22) and Mentee Handbook (pg. 26). Priscilla and Linda were matched in an M&M relationship 19 years ago in Saddleback Churches Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry. They set a service-project goal to make Easter baskets for the moms and children of the Sheepfold and Eli Home (homes for abused women and their children). Here is an excerpt from an email I just received from Priscilla:

Dearest Janet,

I want you to know that 98 Easter Baskets were delivered this year to the Sheepfold and Eli Home Shelter. Linda Engen and I were trying to figure out how many consecutive years we've been doing Easter Baskets for the mothers and their children. [It's been 19!]

Every basket had a new Bible, Journal, Devotional (Jesus Calling/Power of Praying Parent), Mary Kay make-up bag, jewelry, and pajamas with slippers, etc.

We have a core group of Saddleback Church women who come every year, many of whom were in the Women to Woman Mentoring Ministry. They pick up a tag for a mom and boy or girl, and pray asking God to lead them to exactly what to put in the basket. The love-filled baskets are distributed on Easter Sunday to the women and children of the Sheepfold and Eli Home.

Thank you for bringing Linda & me together in the mentoring ministry. God has not stopped providing us with opportunities to serve. We even have mothers who bring their children to assemble baskets so they can learn the power of giving to others. 25 years ago, I was being cared for by The House of Ruth Women's Shelter with my two young sons. Now, my husband and I have 3 children/step-children and six grand-children!

All my love & prayers for you, your family, and your ministry!

Your sister in Christ,

Priscilla Beissel

Katelyn's Baptism
Katelyn's Baptism

May 18th my 8-year-old granddaughter, Katelyn, made a public profession of faith by being baptized by her mommy and daddy.

Tears flowed and my heart swelled as I took the above video of this momentous celebration. The lighting wasn't great in the church, unfortunately, and didn't capture the joy that was on Katelyn's face, but another one of her grandmas commented on how happy Katelyn looked!

If you have read my book Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter, you know that my husband Dave and I had the honor of baptizing Katelyn's mommy and daddy two weeks before their wedding. My constant prayer has been that our family's prodigal chains would be broken in the next generation, and I'm praising God for daily answering those prayers.

Grandparents, pray for your grandchildren and watch God work in t
heir lives!

Finding MOMMY Bliss
Discovering unexpected joy in everyday moments.
by Genny Heikka

Genny Heikka and I are both mentor moms for The M.O.M. Initiative and we will be keynoting and sharing workshops at the Better Together Conference July 31-Aug 2 in Jacksonville, Fl. Genny and her family are also becoming fellow California transplants to Idaho,as they will be moving to Boise next month. I'm delighted to share with you a discussion we had about her new book . . .

What's Finding Mommy Bliss about?

It's about discovering unexpected joy in the day-to-day grind (and sometimes chaos!) that comes with being a mom. Parenting is amazing and wonderful, but any mom knows it can also be stressful and complicated. There are temper tantrums, sleepless nights, and tough phases that our kids go through. There's also the self-doubt and frustration that can come with parenting, and even fear and uncertainty. But there really is laughter and love . . . and, yes, even bliss in the journey. Sometimes, we just miss it. We get caught up in rushing around from soccer to swim team, from the grocery store to the doctor's office, from one load of laundry or dishes to the next, and we don't have time to think about what's so magical about motherhood. Finding Mommy Bliss gives moms 20 tips (in 20 short chapters) that can help them find more joy, right where they're at.

Why did you write this book?

I wrote it to encourage moms. I've had the opportunity to be part of several mentoring organizations over the years, and through that, and my own experience as a mom, I know that even though  motherhood is one of the most important jobs there is, it can also be one of the toughest. It can be easy to get frustrated, discouraged, or even feel lonely sometimes. I wrote this book to give moms a reminder of how important their role is, and to also give them tips and ideas that can really make a difference in how we feel, and how we parent.

What is one of the tips from your book that you can share with moms?

Ask for help when you need it and don't do motherhood alone. It sounds basic, but it can be so hard for us moms to do. Yet the times we are able share what we are going through with another mom, and have her offer understanding and say, "I went through that too, and here's how I got through it," can make all the difference. When we remember that we don't have to have it all figured out by ourselves, our load becomes so much lighter. I'm convinced that, as parents, we never really have it all figured out. But the good news is, God does. When we lean on others, and especially on Him, we are able to experience so much more joy in our journey as moms.
