About His Work with Janet                        July 2013

A BLESSING AND A HEARTBREAK!

Last week, I was grumbling about filling out a long form for a local author's group. I really don't like forms and had procrastinated until the night before the due date. I decided to go to Amazon for ISBN numbers and descriptions, and there it was--I couldn't believe it--Dear God, They Say It's Cancer: A Companion Guide for Women on the Breast Cancer Journey was in the top 100 Best Sellers for breast cancer books --#28 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Diseases & Physical Ailments > Cancer > Breast Cancer!

I seldom look at my Amazon sales numbers, which change daily. If I let those numbers influence me, I might never write again. So I have no idea how long this book has been on Amazon's bestseller list--every author's dream--or how long it will stay there. Let me clarify that my book was not in the top 100 of all books on Amazon, but it was in the top 100 in its category. The number fluctuates from day to day, but it's stayed in the top 100 for awhile.

In shock, I clicked on the link to the page displaying the top 100 books; and yes, there it was #28! A joyous "Yahoo!" quickly turned into a heartbreaking moan

For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.(Luke 18:16b)

Katelyn: Mommy, I had a bad dream and I need to get in bed with you and daddy and be between you.

Mommy: I'm so sorry! Climb in...

Katelyn snuggles in tight between mommy and daddy and starts talking softly.

Mommy: Shhhh Katelyn...let's go back to sleep.

Katelyn: I'm praying!

When mommy shared the above story, I was overjoyed. Not that 7-year-old Katelyn had a nightmare, but that she prayerfully turned to Jesus to find peace. When she and her brother and sister are visiting with us and they say they can't go to sleep, I'll suggest: Well just pray for a while and you will. Katelyn understands what adults so often forget: Jesus is always waiting for us with a listening ear and abounding peace. I pray that Katelyn never forgets the comfort that comes from praying to Jesus.

Interview about Ragged Hope: Surviving the Fallout of Other People's Choices by Cynthia Ruchti

"Ragged Hope" is an interesting expression. Can hope completely wear out? Is it, as they say, a consumable, with an expiration date?

When the road has been interminably long, the struggle exhausting, the aftershocks as unnerving as the initial crisis, our hope can begin to look worn around the edges, tattered, frayed. But hope rooted in the truths God expressed in His Word can never wear out. It may look that way from our side, from our viewpoint. But from God's angle, it is as solid as ever. Discovering the tenacity of hope when we think it's almost completely worn through is part of the wonder in these stories of survivors of other people's incredibly bad and in some instances life-altering decisions.

No one would argue that it isn't fair that innocent bystanders would have to shoulder a heavy burden of consequences for someone else's bad behavior or poor choices. Some would question, "Where is God in all this?" How does the book Ragged Hope respond?

Sometimes I wonder if God doesn't want to erase the word "fair" from the dictionary. He's the only one who can pull off "fair" consistently, and His definition often doesn't mesh with our limited understanding. Life itself lacks fairness. But that doesn't equate to God's absence. I've been deeply touched by the stories of people who have endured absurdities and abuses that make us shudder, but who report having felt a sense that God was there, even then, that He cared-which He does-and that His own heart breaks with our pain. The comfort in that became a holding on place for them, as it can for all of us.

Life seems to be a constant balance of knowing when to be tough and when to be tender. From both the survivor's perspective and the viewpoint of people like us who care about them and want to help make a difference, how do those two factors play out when someone else's choices wind up costing a high price?

The tough-and-tender question is a great example of something impossible to manage without God's help. Finding that balance--knowing when to speak and when to be quiet, when to encourage and when to challenge, when to toughen up and when to soften up, when to intervene and when to let the scene play out--can only be accomplished with any sense of confidence when we're maintaining a strong connection with the God who can show us how. One of my current favorite verses of Scripture reminds us that His understanding is unlimited. Who else could we trust to whisper wisdom's direction in our ear?

Can you encapsulate the core message of Ragged Hope: Surviving the Fallout of Other People's Choices? Is there one particular verse from the Bible that expresses its heart?

Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone's going through something, or they know someone who is. So much attention is thrown on the person who causes the pain, who has a headline-making moral failure, whose sin land's them in jail. But these are stories of those who are left to pick up the pieces, who are living in the fallout. Listening to their stories of courage, seeing the way they let God redeem their circumstances, the way He points them to where His Hope remains vital and vibrant despite their difficulties can't help but inspire us and strengthen our own view of the exquisite value of hope, even when it looks worn around the edges."And hope does not disappoint," the Bible tells us in Romans 5:5.

The psalmist repeats a particular phrase several times in Psalm 42 and 43, as if reminding himself and us: "I will hope again."

No matter how knee-rattling or heart-wrenching the circumstances, we can cling to handholds of hope while we wait for rescue.

I'd love to keep the conversation going, discussing times when hope seems to hide among the fallout ash of other people's choices. If you go to my website, you can learn more about

Ragged Hope: Surviving the Fallout of Other People's Choices

and about my other books.

Thank you, Janet, for hosting me on your newsletter and giving me the opportunity to present what I pray will be a hope-giving book for those standing by or in the middle of a crisis not of their own doing. I would like to give away books to two of your readers.

For a chance to win a free copy of Ragged Hope: Surviving the Fallout of Other People's Choices send us your comment and we'll have a drawing this Friday.

Congratulations to Judy Jagels the winner of last month's book, A Gradual Disappearance.
