About His Work with Janet                        May 2013

   Two About His Work!

The day before Mother's Day, my daughter Kim Mancini and I shared our mother/daughter story at a Mother's Day Tea at The Journey Church in Idaho Falls. Our topic: Are You the Woman Today You Want Your Daughter to Become or Your Son to Marry? The verse that accompanied our talk was 1 Corinthians 11:1 "Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ" (NIV). "Imitate me as I imitate Christ" (NLT).

If you've read my book, Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter, I wrote about our journey of me being a prodigal mom raising a prodigal daughter. Kim also writes what she was thinking and feeling during those years. Praise God, when she was nineteen I rededicated my life to Christ at a Harvest Crusade and I thought Kim would follow right behind me; but she didn't want anything to do with this new "weird" mom. I started praying for her to change her ways and she resented my prayers. So I prayed and prayed and prayed . . . .

Then 21 years later, here we were on the stage together sharing our story of God's forgiveness and grace and His answer to a mother's prayers. Kim shared how upset she was when she learned I was praying for her and, then, how her life changed forever when my husband and I gave her and her fiancé a biblically based pre-marital course where they both accepted Christ as their Savior and were baptized two weeks before their wedding.

As I watched my poised, articulate, beautiful godly daughter sharing what God had done in her life and how He was faithful to her through her infertility years, I honestly felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. I had pictured this day for many years--the day she would be ready to join me in my About His Work Ministries as Two About His Work. And there we were speaking together like we had been doing it all our lives . . . well it was our life we were speaking about.

If you think you've blown it as a mom, it's never too late. Keep praying and asking God to help you become a woman who can truly say: "Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ". If you have a wayward child, "Never stop praying" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

What Readers Are Saying:

Janet, I'm so excited! My book, Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter arrived today! I didn't comprehend the depth of this book until I held it in my hands! As I glanced through the back cover to glean from the chapter topics, "Setting Boundaries, Surviving in Marriage (Friday we celebrate 22 years of marital bliss - ha! Throw in a number of lengthy military separations, a year long deployment and the challenges that come with raising four children, one being a prodigal, Lord may it be only one, well you get the picture), Resolving Conflict, Making It All about Her, and What Did We Do to Cause This?, Wow! I can't wait to delve into this gem! Thank you in advance. I know God will use it to encourage my heart, even more than it is now. Sherry Lynn Lightner

I am a huge fan of your book Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter. I never would have made through my daughter's senior year in HS if not for your book and all the journaling I did! That was five years ago, and we are now closer than ever with a wonderful son-in-law and an adorable granddaughter! God is so good when we are faithful to Him... Beverly Ward

FEATURED WOMAN TO WOMAN MENTORING MINISTRY TESTIMONY

Dear Janet,

Our church, Crossview Covenant, in North Mankato, Minnesota has been using your mentoring materials since 2003. Next fall will be our 10th anniversary of a Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry at Crossview.

Our 10th Anniversary celebration will be Saturday, September 14, 2013. Our photographer Sheila will be capturing it all, so we will be sure to send you some pictures via e-mail.

Our ministry here began from your Woman to Woman Mentoring Kit and we still follow the manual pretty closely. Since Minnesotans are wired from September through May, we only do two "semesters" (as we call them) a year - one in the fall and one in the spring. Each lasts about four months.

One change we made was to have a Celebration Brunch on a Saturday morning instead of the Celebration Potluck on a Sunday. This seems to work well for both the participants and the team. We provide the egg bake, the M&Ms each bring 2 c. cut-up fruit to put in a bowl, PWs and PDT members bring 1/2 doz. muffins each. We watch your video clip after the brunch and then finish off with M&M ice cream sundaes. :-)

Thank you again for this ministry and may God continue to bless you as you go "about His work".

Most sincerely,

Margrethe Eidet

I also talk in Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter about breaking generational sins. My grandmother was a prodigal, my mother was a prodigal, I was a prodigal who raised a prodigal. Looking at these two sweet granddaughters, Kim and I are determined the prodigal chain will be broken in this generation.

How will we do that? By having the difficult conversations with the girls and teaching them right from wrong and the consequences of sinful behavior. Yes, we will use the word sin and how it always leads to pain.

I pray Scripture for all my grandchildren, just like I prayed for Kim. I also pray that my granddaughters will be so lost in God that a boy seeking their attention will have to seek God to find them. Because if we don't teach our children to follow Christ, the world will teach them not to.

Grandparenting with a Purpose: Effective Ways to Pray for Your Grandchildren

by Lillian Penner

As a grandparent of 11, I strongly believe in purposeful grandparenting and praying for your grandchildren, as I mentioned above in Grammie's Corner. I was so happy to learn of Lillian Penner's book and ask her a few questions:

  • How did you first get involved with Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN)?

I received the special gift of grandparenting as I was approaching my midlife season. It was exciting to become a grandparent at 43 years of age. However, I learned that along with this gift came a sacred trust to imprint another generation with the message of God's faithfulness. Reflecting on my new responsibility, I realized my prayers were too general and vague and I became frustrated with how I was praying for my grandchildren.

After I asked God for wisdom and read several books about prayer and grandparenting, my praying changed dramatically. I discovered God's Word was a great resource to help me with my praying, not only for my family, but also for myself. Praying scripture gave me more boldness and confidence in my praying.

While surfing on the Internet looking for grandparenting resources, God directed me to the Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN) website. After sharing my passion with them, they invited me to become their National Prayer Coordinator, writing devotionals and prayer suggestions on their website.

How are you fulfilling your passion for the grandparenting ministry?

While working with CGN God has given me the opportunity to develop the following prayer cards: Scriptures to Pray for your Grandchildren and Suggestions to Pray for Children in School from Preschool to College. At this time, we have about 25 Grandparents @ Prayer (G@P) intercessory prayer groups in the U.S. and abroad. G@P groups meet regularly to stand in the gap to pray for their grandchildren just as Esther stood in the gap when her people, the Israelites, were threatened physically. Today, grandparents can stand in the gap in prayer as the spiritual lives of our grandchildren are threatened in our world. These resources are available by emailing Lillian.

God has also given me the opportunity to write the book Grandparenting with a Purpose: Effective Ways to Pray for your Grandchildren.

Synopsis: Maybe your grandchildren are living with you. Maybe they're thousands of miles away. Their parents may be spiritually rebellious or simply neglectful of the family's spiritual life, failing to make prayer and church attendance a regular part of their routine. But even if your grandchildren's parents have established a strong Christian home, busy schedules, jobs, parenting, and all the distractions of today's world conspire to distract or even destroy the family. How can you, as a grandparent, help?

God gives grandparents a sacred trust-an opportunity to imprint another generation with the message of his faithfulness. You can stand in the gap by being a godly example for your grandchildren and by praying for them. Even grandparents who already pray regularly for their grandchildren will discover creative suggestions for making the practice even more meaningful. From cell phones to photo prayer journals, you will find tools that work for you-and for your grandchildren.

The book provides specific examples of prayers to help you get started, such as alphabet prayers, prayers based on special scriptures, and prayers for certain holidays. You may even widen the circle, praying for other children in your life, for children who have parents in the military, and for the adults who influence your grandchildren. Regardless of how far away your grandchildren are, praying for them can bridge the distance between you and leave them with an inheritance more precious than gold.

Lillian's book is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Crossbooks Publishing, and her website.
