Get Ready for Tax Season

United Way of Broward County is giving local families a helping hand by providing free tax preparation services aboard its Mobile Resource Center. The branded RV, along with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers, will be touring Broward County through April 11 in order to reach residents who do not have the ability or means to access accountants for tax preparation.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) programs provide federal tax benefits for low and moderate-income workers. The EITC benefit can be worth up to $6,044 for families who worked in 2013. Workers raising children who earned less than about $52,000 in 2013 may be eligible for the EITC.  For Tax Year 2012, EITC recipients in Broward County received more than $513,800,000 in refunds.

United Way of Broward County is collaborating with a host of partners including:  Children's Services Council of Broward County, Hispanic Unity of Florida, Urban League of Broward County, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., Consolidated Credit Counseling Services, Inc., Wells Fargo, 2-1-1 Broward, Minority Development & Empowerment, Inc., Internal Revenue Service, Broward County, and HandsOn Broward.

United Way of Broward County Joins Dialogue on Hidden Poor

United Way of Broward County, in partnership with the United Way Florida Association, is undertaking an initiative that will focus on specific programs to assist residents who are employed, but not able to make ends meet. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed. ALICE represents men and women of all ages who go to work, but are not sure they will earn enough to put food on the table or pay their mortgage. The challenges within this population are great. United Way of Broward County is committed to working with its community partners to determine how we can collaboratively and strategically address the issues ALICE faces each day.

PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE: Port Everglades Expansion Projects

United Way of Broward County supports the expansion and this is why our community benefits:
  • Port Everglades is a major economic engine for Broward County. The Port is not supported by tax dollars and reinvests its profits back into its infrastructure. A large variety of well-paying jobs requiring high skill sets are provided, but they do not necessarily require higher education degrees. It is the number one foreign trade zone in the U.S., and only trade district in U.S. that always has a trade surplus, exporting more than we import. Many Port exports are products, such as computer parts, made in other states, but shipped from Port Everglades to companies in Latin America.
  • An important component in United Way of Broward County's work with low-income working families is access to family-sustaining employment.  The median income in Broward County is $48,000, but the income needed to sustain a family of four is more than $69,000.  Port expansion will increase the availability of higher paying jobs in both the short and long term.  The success of United Way's work and of low-income families in Broward depends on this kind of job creation and economic development.
