Whether you are a parent, a teacher or a Broward County resident, you can make a difference in the quality of education the children in our community are receiving. ReadingPals:  Volunteers Wanted

In the first year of the ReadingPals initiative focused on engaging, training and deploying volunteer "reading pals" in our community. As a result, ReadingPals quickly made its mark in Broward County. Last year, ReadingPals contributed 1,833 hours and impacted the lives of 167 students while helping them improve their reading skills. The need for such a program is evident, as the number of locations with ReadingPals grew from three in 2012 to 12 in 2013.  Volunteers were hard at work throughout the summer attending training sessions in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Tools for Kids

Tools for Kids Over the summer, Publix Super Markets held an in-store promotion for United Way of Broward County to help provide children in our community with school supplies. The items purchased with these dollars will be distributed to Broward County public school teachers. Publix shoppers had the opportunity to donate $5, $7 or $10 at the checkout and received a free reusable bag as a thank you.

A special thank you to Publix and Publix shoppers for the money raised to ensure our students and teachers have the tools needed to succeed in school.

MISSION UNITED's Back to School Drive

In early August, United Way of Broward County, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, held a Back-To-School Supply Drive for children of local Broward County veterans and active duty military service members as a part of the MISSION UNITED initiative.

Thanks to the support of generous donors and corporate partners, more than 230 backpacks were filled with school supplies and handed out at the William Kling VA Clinic in Sunrise. Because of your support, hundreds of kids will have the school supplies they need for the first day of school.
