Assisting Those Who Served Our Country

MISSION UNITED is a critical new initiative which focuses on supporting the more than 110,000 veterans living in Broward County by helping them re-acclimate to civilian life.  Broward County does not have a military base to support these veterans and their families. Many are facing foreclosure, unemployment, legal issues, depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges.

United Way of Broward County and The American Red Cross will use MISSION UNITED to align existing services and create programs where there are gaps in support. As the primary case manager, The American Red Cross will operate its Transition Reintegration Plan "TRP" to deliver vital coordination services and advocacy for these returning veterans. Under MISSION UNITED, United Way of Broward County and The American Red Cross will ensure every military service member is "no more than two steps to help."

As a message of gratitude and support for those who have served our great country, United Way of Broward County and a host of community and corporate partners committed to MISSION UNITED are eager to connect these veterans with a wide array of services to make the transition easier and help them get their lives back.

This Veteran's Day, we ask you to help celebrate our veterans by volunteering or simply thanking a veteran for their service to our country. To donate or learn more about MISSION UNITED, visit www.MissionUnited.org.

More than 20,000 Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans are currently living in Broward County and thousands more are expected to move to our community within the next three years.

MISSION UNITED Legal Program Announced

United Way of Broward County and Legal Aid Service of Broward County have partnered together to launch the newest veteran's pro bono project that will offer a broad range of civil legal services to military members, veterans and their families.

The program, funded by United Way, will supply an attorney and a part-time paralegal who will oversee the recruitment, training, support and mentoring of pro bono attorneys who have made a commitment to provide legal services to veterans.

For more information about the legal program or to sign up to become a pro bono attorney for MISSION UNITED, please contact Melisa Melone at (954) 736-2426 or mmalone@legalaid.org.

Operation Appliance Aid:  Keeping Things Running Smoothly for our Veterans

United Way of Broward County and Cross Country Home Services announced the second recipient to benefit from the Operation Appliance Aid program.

Seventy-five year old retired National Guardsman Arnold Merl received a much-needed air conditioning unit on behalf of the program at his home in Tamarac. Arnold and his wife had been living in their home without air conditioning for nearly 10 months before they were presented with the new unit.

Through this program, CCHS will donate more than $30,000 worth of new appliances and home systems to veteran and military service families in need throughout Broward County over the next year. For more information about Operation Appliance Aid, please click here.
