Tuning In to How Your Child Learns

by Devi Borton, M.A., Certified Music Together Teacher Trainer

Look around a Music Together class and you'll notice different behavioral "personalities." Some children sit still and stare at their parent or teacher singing "Obwisana." Others gaze out the window or look at their toes while the class marches and sings "Lukey's Boat." And some are constantly in motion, jumping or toddling around exuberantly, even when everyone else is in a close circle quietly singing "Who's That?" Do you recognize your child in any of these examples?

Musical Glasses
Fill a variety of glasses or glass containers with different amounts of water. Gently tap on the side of each with a metal spoon to hear the pitches. (Supervise your children carefully, of course!) Ask your child to tell you which glasses make higher and lower sounds. You might add different food coloring to the glasses so it's easier to compare and contrast.

"Do, Re, Mi" Bottles

Here's a variation you might try with older children who are learning the Major scale (do, re, mi . . .). Gather eight identical 20 oz. glass or plastic bottles and fill with water according to the measurements below. If you wish, add food coloring to each bottle. Then, line them up in order and blow across the tops to sound the notes!

Do: 7 oz.; Re: 9.5 oz.; Mi: 12.5 oz.; Fa: 14 oz.; Sol: 16.5 oz.; La: 17.5 oz.; Ti: 18.5 oz.; Do: 19 oz.

Have fun creating simple melodies. Try the "Hello Song" using the "notes" below.

Mi, Sol, La, La, Mi, Do --- Hello, everybody,

Do, Re, Do, Re, Mi --- so glad to see you!

Mi, Sol, La, La, Mi, Do --- Hello, everybody,

Do, Do, Mi, Do, Re, Do --- I'm so glad to see you!

What do we mean by "Approaches to Learning"?

As a parent, you want to do everything you can to support your children's healthy development and ensure that they are ready for formal education when the time comes. You've probably heard of the five main domains of early childhood development: cognitive, physical, language, social, and emotional. During the first few years of life, children experience rapid growth in each of these areas. This development is integral to what is called "school readiness": possessing the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to successfully engage in learning when entering kindergarten.

Did you also know there is another developmental area that is equally---if not more---important to school readiness? It's called Approaches to Learning (ATL), and it encompasses not what children learn, but how they learn.
