Looking Back: Twenty-five Years

of Making Music Together

by Kenneth K. Guilmartin,

Music Together Founder/Director

25th Anniversary Logo

As we begin to celebrate our 25th anniversary year, I've been reflecting not only on how we've grown, but also on why. I believe we've succeeded so well because we began 25 years ago by offering something of primal importance: a chance for children to recognize, express, and enjoy their innate musical ability-a potential shared by all humans but often left unexplored. And, now, in today's ultra-digital age, that is even truer! More than ever, so many grateful parents are surprised to discover the remarkable sense of satisfaction and community that comes from actively making music together. Over and over again, we see parents sign up for classes to give their children an enrichment activity-and then stay for years because Music Together has enhanced their whole family's lives so profoundly and to such an unexpected extent. In a digital culture where today's families are challenged to bond, share joy, and be present for each other, family music-making may have become more valuable and vital than ever.

Of course, it's also gratifying to reflect on the other sense of "making Music Together": the making of this quality program and the story of how we've grown. Back in 1987, when my program coauthor Dr. Lili Levinowitz and I offered the first Music Together classes, it was a real stretch to imagine that they would one day be taught in nearly every state in the US and in forty other countries around the world. Now, 25 years later, Music Together provides not only family classes but also in-school curricula, music therapy applications, and outreach initiatives as part of our commitment to bringing the joy and benefits of music-making to as many children and families as possible.

Still Singing After All These Years

by Kate Battenfeld

Music Together has been a source of bonding, music learning, and inspiration for children and adults all around the globe. As the program has grown and developed over the past twenty-five years, it has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of Music Together teachers, parents, caregivers, and grandparents, as well as the children who have grown up with Music Together.

Now reaching two thousand locations in forty countries, Music Together began in Princeton, NJ, with just a few classes in 1987. Many of the families and teachers who were part of those early years still feel a deep connection to Music Together and cherish their musical memories. Here are just two. Please visit our  25th Anniversary web page for more---and share your own Music Together stories!

The Simon Family today
Lori Simon began taking classes in Princeton in 1990 with her son Ari when he was seven months old. She had always been a "music person" and was excited to enroll Ari in a music class. Lori, Ari, and her husband Ed were in classes taught by some of the very first Music Together teachers, including Founder/Director Kenneth K. Guilmartin and Janet Campbell, both of whom are still actively teaching today. Lori was thrilled to discover that the classes gave her an opportunity to bond with her son and provided him with a soothing, positive environment where he was accepted and encouraged to make music.

When Sarah Krauss was eighteen months old, she loved to sing and  dance in her Music Together class. As a teen, she loved to sing and dance on stage---so much so that in 2006, she competed in the "Be Wicked" singing contest in New York City and won the coveted first prize!

Music Together at Home
This Halloween, add some musical play to your celebration by changing the words to some of your favorite Music Together songs. Here are lyric-subsitution ideas for two tunes from this semester's Fiddle Song collection.

Here's a spooky version of the chant "The Sounds of Fall," complete with new ideas for sound effects.

Listen to the owls hooting one by one. Tree with falling leaves
Whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo.

When we trick or treat we're gonna have some fun!
Yum, yum, yum, yum.

Listen to the wind in the trees at night.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.

Watch out for the teeth of the things that bite!
Ack, ack, ack, ack!

Try these seasonal lyrics for "A Ram Sam Sam."

Spider
A spooky ghost, a spooky ghost,
A creepy, creepy spider and a spooky ghost.
A black cat! A black cat!
A creepy, creepy spider and a spooky ghost!

--- Happy Halloween! ---
